Max effort NA 335 build

Who has done it, what parts used and results?

Not supercharging, not doing a 350 383 or anything else the owner is stuck on this
Will have headers, everythign else will be made to look plain jane as possible, will be carbureted, HEI just basic stuff that is reliable.
May even use an air cleaner off a 1 ton dually as they have large snorkels and can house a 3-4 in tall element..blue paint the works

Undecided on studded 2 bolt or splayed 4 bolt.
manners vacuum, mpg not a concern just brute power however it has to get there.
Project is going to start shortly, aiming for 5xx at the crank, if its a little less so be it
HAvent come near of these forever...having trouble finding answes for piston PN and figuring the needed CC size for head before selecting one

12:1 give or take
Solid flat tappet

Rest is up in the air, may go E85 if absolutely necessary or mixing up some good gas

Searched, million threads on 305s cant read em all.

any opinions or proven results?

Re: Max effort NA 335 build

i think your headed it the right direction considering compression, E85/race gas, & solid cam, BUT,....this has been brought up so many times,....why start with a 305? the cost to build it, stroke it, splay in, machine work, parts for 500HP, etc.,....sure makes absolutely no sense to start with a 305. your going to put thousands of dollars into a $50, small inch, block. on the outside nobody will ever know the difference in displacement.
I'd try to talk some sense into your customer.

Re: Max effort NA 335 build

Thanks
he has bigger motors but is stuck on seeing what can be had out of one of these, just a fun project for him thats all.
Money isnt so much the issue just a goal thats all. now if he was wanting to use stock heads hoping it will get 25 mpg etc of course Id say something to him

I agree....but this is what he wants and knows the downsides, expectations are realistic. He knows manners vacuum and mpg will suck he doesnt care
Will be in a light car with deep gears.

Looking at the trick flow 175s and will put some more work to them as they have the 1.94 valve and dont flow too bad to start with.

Re: Max effort NA 335 build

I doubt you'll find info here. There were a few mild tpi 305 and 335 builds, and i think one guy using the tfs 175 small bore heads. Was far from max effort i believe

I would do e85 tho and small dome to get compression up. Gonna be a custom piston i fear. Run about 120-140 each plus rings

These are Aerohead Racing prepared production 601 castings with 1.94/ 1.50 valves bowls blended and gasket marched. You may consider a XE262H or XE268H cam.....

Good Luck

Curious what that set you back?
If 400 was the goal perhaps the stockers would be an option
I hate doing iron heads though lol.

Re: Max effort NA 335 build

I'm interested to see how you go with this build myself. I'm prepping a car for Tarmac Rallys in Australia. We are competing in a class that limits modifications so we need to run the stock engine configuration but can modify quite a bit, though alloy heads are a not an option as we have to use OE head material.

I was tempted to go the other way though and de-stroke the 305 or use standard crank, rather than stroking. Heads options are a pain over hear as the infamous "601" castings aren't readily available. But once I get my heads over to my engine guy I might have more to share.

The 416 casting are also considered a good 305 head.

Good Luck

Watching. But I have to agree that this is a waste of time and money. And I have a 334.

Re: Max effort NA 335 build

After some time with my machinist on the phone seems to think for typical street play, no spray an occasional blast to 6-7k a studded 2 bolt and 5140 crank will live fine, forged piston/Ibeam
Trick flow 175s with additional porting
SFT cam some compression should be liveable. Not mild but not undriveable.

will play around with a real good dual plane or smallish single plane holley 4779 or? should get there or real close to it.

See how it goes, if he still wants to spray it motor will get pricy real quick
seems within reach of the avg guy building a motor nothing real exotic

in his hands from this point, as it comes along will post up.

Re: Max effort NA 335 build

Thanks for the search

Hes going to stick with a solid flat tappet probably from Isky or Mike Jones

guess I wouldnt call this "max effort" but strong street engine

cant see doing bigger heads, splaying mains, rollers etc seems to cross the line of too much in the wrong motor. All fun stuff though.

You can't splay the mains on a 305 block - the material that IS there on a 350 block IS NOT THERE on the 305.

Just change the numbers on a 350 block (the raised ones - yes, it can be done) and build a 350.

I think that sofa will tell you to install a 4" bore kit.

Re: Max effort NA 335 build

Didnt know that about the block, keeps getting better and better lol.

Guys now talking about a street blower less rpms.

Project creep here we go.
Think its the smarter way to make power though, came very close but cheaped out, turned it into an rpm motor. Even 5-6 lbs of boost does wonders.
Studding the 2 bolt and holding breath-

That must depend on the block casting. I have splayed two different 305 blocks because I was bored and studded a factory 4-bolt main 305 block. One of them is still holding 20 psi of boost from twin turbos. It is in a Nova drag car with a blow through CSU carb on it. It was a pretty basic build and has no problem going fast.

For the record I have never seen a 305 block with less metal in the main cap web area than a 350. The blocks I splayed were both 203' casting number blocks out of mid 80s trucks/vans. The factory 4-bolt was out of a 1983 G20 van.

I have turned the stock bottem end 2-bolt 305 up to 7,200 rpm on the Strip a few times.

The 059 305 Vortec castings are the best factory 305 head out there, closely followed by using a set of aluminum L98 350 heads from the ZZ3/ZZ4 crate engines.

Re: Max effort NA 335 build

My original 84 TA 305 2 bolt main block is the 201 casting.
Trust me, the main webs do not have the extra "meat" that a 350 block has.

I wish I knew that a 4 bolt main 305 block existed.

If the 305s I have built had any more webbing it would hit the pistons and crank counterweights. It was the same as the 350s I have built.

I have built both the 203 and later 1996-2002 Vortec castings.

You can see the nice thick casted areas where the 2nd set of mains bolts get drilled and tapped.

This was a stock rebuild taken from a 1996 Express van with a mild cam to put into my brothers 1999 Tahoe.

This was a 203 casting from a 1984 van. It had 7 good factory "X" rods in it even.
