FYI...When GM releases parts (as you see them listed in the parts catalog), there is a list of std. names that they work from. So some part names get close to the theme or idea of what a part is, but may not strike some as being as specific as they should be. But GM has to have some control...you can't issue a new parts name every time a variation on a theme comes down the pike, for the 10k some parts that make up an automobile.

 

Did the exact thing putting mine back together after paint.

 

Keep in mind that it will force air INTO the engine compartment at speed, but allow heat to come out when stopped. I had mine opened until it rained and made water spots on some of my engine pieces... so I doubled up on it with the flat backer.

The Screens I have are both Aluminum... Hmm...

 

Sounds like a win-win for opening that up on NON functioning Formula hoods. Like I said, it looks good, but might be an idea to keep a piece of tape inside on it IF you know your going to drive in heavy rain. For some of us, driving in rain is NOT an option!

 

Interesting to know that there seems not to be a big problem with water entering in the engine compartment. maybe adding the drip rail would lower the risk even more... anyway, good info, thanks guys!

All (8-10) of my screens are aluminum same with the solid block off panels, aluminum. Nothing plastic that I've ever seen.
My 2 89 formulas and 3 92 formulas have a metal cast hood insert.

 

My plate seems to be an aluminum but I have seen a different plate before with small round holes instead of slots.

I duno. It is different than the others I have seen. I do have a spare block off plate that seems to be out of same material. Maybe the PO had it made.

 

It would not be hard to router something like that out of some thin aluminum, I could make them all day long once I got set up. THe little honeycomb would be a pain in the butt tho...

I've seen this plate before. I had my STOCK plate cutout (a friend of mine has a machine shop) and made one just like it. Did you buy yours on eBay? If so, that's where I listed it.

 

My car was originally from the New Jersey area and was sold to a man in Louisiana whom I bought it from. It had the air-induction and all on it when the PO bought it so..who knows

Only second hand. Try ebay, and don't forget your wallet.

 

IIRC the ductwork for the hood to the air cleaner is different for the LG4/L69 is different than the Cross Fire. The 4BBL cars had a round hole, the Cross Fire cars was more diamond shaped.

Correct. The CFI version also has the rubber boot oh the hood ducting, while the carbed version has it on the aircleaner lid.

I haven't looked lately, but it seems there are more of the carbed setups available in recent years than there were a decade ago. I suppose it's due to more cars being junked, and more people looking to make a buck, and higher prices, making for more supply, less demand, and items sitting "on the shelf" waiting for the right buyer.

Very cool read. I've just started looking for one of the carb version air cleaners. I'm interested to see if this would would work on an 80-81 Trans Am hood. I have a '79 Trans Am and I'm working on installing a 454 TBI controlled by a Megasquirt computer.

I tried to be smart by using a 3rd gen cowl induction setup on my 2nd gen hood. Someone I'm friends with on Facebook told me that this setup is completely interchangeable but I think I found otherwise. I'm debating on selling the 3rd gen setup or trying to modify it to work with my hood. Is there something I'm missing here?

I can imagine that the systems are not interchangeable simply because on the second gen Trans Am the hood scoop was not meant for cowl induction but rather to get some clearance for the air cleaner which had to be relocated for the turbo. I believe the PMD engineers had to redesign the system completely for the third generation to get cowl induction working.

Probably reworking the 3rd gen setup to fit in a 2nd gen car would involve a lot of work, all of it would have to be rather well sealed to get the air flow into the carb. Nevertheless that would be an awesome project that I'd love to see!

I have a 1984 Firebird that has a burnt solenoid (part # 10025693). Does anyone know where I can find another one?

BTW, when searching for this issue, I found two Technical Service Bulletins related to this: 83-I-121 and 84-6-241. They both recommend changing the vacuum switch (AIR INT SCOOP DR A/CL, part # 10032130). I know it's near unfindable, but where could it be found if it was still available?

I have an original 1980 Turbo Trans am. No doubt that would have been a clearance problem without the bump in the hood in 1980-81. Good sized heat shield on it too. That under hood get hot as all heck after driving it around for a while. Makes a guy wonder what would have happened if the engineers would have been able to fit it all under the hood without any clearance issues. Would the turbo "bump" exist on the early 3rd gens today?

Even though they were originally designed for the 80-81's I think they look better on the 82+ 3rd gen cars.

 

I'm late to the party here since I haven't posted in over three years, but I remembered to come on here because someone e-mailed me if I had any parts.

Back in the late 1990s, and through most of the 2000s... I supplemented my income as a computer programmer by pulling parts of cars in the junkyard. For those who may know the place, it's U-PULL-IT in Davie, Florida... now owned by LKQ.

Anyway, this basically being Fort Lauderdale and Miami area, there were always Maseratis, Porsches, Rolls Royces, and any number of fancy cars there. It was pretty common to find loaded vehicles, including 2nd and 3rd gen cars where they had these options on them across the board. Whether it was the factory subwoofer "performance sound" or the cowl induction hoods, etc.

I made it a point to buy up all the cowl components I found in the junkyard. I also saw several Z-28s with fiberglass factory cowl hoods (the ones with the vents down the middle where the flap would open down into the hood).


I still have probably at least a dozen or more complete kits. Unfortunately, they're all stored neatly in boxes, hidden at the far end of a home that I no longer live in, and am currently renting out. The current tenant has no clue, because I carried the boxes to the other end of the attic, but I'm a good 1,400 miles away from there right now. But... if anyone needs some of these... hit me up in 5-6 years and I might be living in South Florida again, hahah.


But I think this write-up is awesome, thanks for posting it. I've always thought this was such a cool idea for the 3rd gen cars!

What a great read! I still have both air boxes and air cleaners from an 83 trans am and an 84 trans am that I had 25 years ago lol. Both were l69 cars. I took them off because I liked looking through the scoop at a chrome air cleaner lol

Well, GM doesn't generally keep parts in inventory for more than a few years. After 10 years they tend to look at the cost to warehouse an item, vs the potential that it'll sell, and parts get scrapped. Considering the part in question wasn't that common to begin with, it's pretty safe to say it hasn't been available since the 1980's.

 

Try to post clear photos to reveal the complete route in your wiring circuit.
I see no continuation in your photos but a mix up which confuses me.

 

I have an odd situation i guess. I purchased my 83 T/A from its original owner who said the car is totally original.

It’s an LG4 engine, has an air cleaner with a round opening BUT has the air box cowl opening that is diamond shaped.

is it possible that GM did this? Vin definitely confirms it’s an LG4 car.

 

The diamond shaped air cleaner is from a CFI car. Someone switched your original at some point

 

I spoke with the original owner and he said he did nothing to car and bought it factory as is. I’m stumped. Wondering if this was a factory screw up.

Either way I need to get my hands on the right setup if anyone is out there selling.
