I am replacing all weather stripping -I see there are 3 different products used.

1) adhesive to glue on the rubber around door etc.

2)a thick black slightly pliable putty stuff-up in the corners of door/roof joints and elsewhere.

3) weatherstrip rails are screwed to body but have a tape or ?? to seal.


can anyone help in identifying each of the items above? i.e. what the factory used and if not avalible then what is a good replacement.

well, that will work great for item 1(doors gaskets)..so just need to figure out what that stuff is for window gaskets and items 2&3.

That's all you need for all 3.no2 you buildup the corners with the 3M and no.3 they just screw in.

I will disagree here and say that the 3M window rope caulk is a better solution. The adhesive gets hard over time, cracks and allows water to get in. It also is harder to clean up the adhesive.

You need the rope caulk to bridge the A pillar to roof and also the B pillar to roof. You will have leaks if you don't bridge that gap with caulk. Others have used the rope caulk for the full install because you can roll it into a thinner rope, and use it in the channels, bridging the gaps at the pillars and also sealing the center bar.

 

That's a good idea and probably a lot cleaner way.I do have to say that I used the tube 3M and it was a little messy but it did work.

 

the rope caulk is just what I was looking for. the local auto paint supply store should carry this, right??
so if I get it. I will use 3m for doors and rope for the rest, i.e. rope thin along channel for gasket and thick in corner -roof to b pillar- and thick up front were door closes with a pillar.
once that's all sealed up I will need to install and adjust door glass-a different thread.

Is the rope caulk used only at the locations listed above, or could it also used at the ends of the seals, near bottom of A and B pillars? Does it have adhesive ability? Seems like a cleaner solution if it works. Thanks.

 

It's very tacky and remains tacky. It doesn't harden. You can use it like an adhesive, but it doesn't hold as strong as the liquid 3M adhesive after it dries. The liquid stuff is like glue. If I had to redo my weatherstripping today, it would be with the rope caulk, completely. It's more forgiving and easier to use, with less mess.

That appears to be the stuff. I used a larger roll that all one piece, rather than smaller strips. But it is the same stuff.
