I have a 2.8L 1985 Berlinetta that is having a fuel issue.
The fuel pump is good ( I checked pressure), I replaced the fuel filter which was clogged and the TPS.
However, the car turns over but is not getting enough fuel to maintain an idle. You can press the accelerator and the RPMs go up but it will backfire. It will not maintain the idle on its own and will not start up unless you use the accelerator.
Do you have to hold the accelerator to the floor to start it and is your SES light on? I ask about the accelerator because holding it to the floor makes the car enter a Clear Flood mode, backfiring is usually a sign of too much fuel. If your fuel filter was trashed I wonder if your injectors are stuck open with gunk. Has the car sat for awhile?
It will barely start without pushing the gas pedal but to keep it from dying you have to keep pressing on the accelerator. Last night I got it to idle on its own. It was a little high but it sustained itself. I am not getting any error codes.
When I went to drive it around my cul-de-sac it moved under its own power in forward and reverse but only at a few miles per hour.
It sat for a couple of weeks after it went bad. Prior to that I was driving it all over town. One night it just suddenly lost power and I could not keep it running.
You would have loved my first one. When i went in the Marine Corps I custom ordered it in 1985. It was Maroon with a gray interior. It had the 305 V-8 with 4 BBL, power seats, power mirrors, power trunk release, cruise control, heavy duty cooling system, block heater, spoiler and tinted windows. It had 7 miles on it when I picked it up.
Have you made sure your injectors are free of junk and working properly? Grab your multimeter and check them, I think around 15 ohms is the number you want (mine are at 12 and still work A-OK.) Good luck!
Actually, it turns out it was the fuel pump. The first time pressure checked good. On a whim, I checked it again and it was only around 7 psi. Changed fuel pump and it works like a charm
