Re: Top leaking need rust repair

Do I have to replace the whole passenger side rear quarter ...?
Or cut out rusty areas and replace them with patches made from doner quarter...??
Any one have pictures of quarter work on a vert...??
Thank you in advance

I have no expertise to help you with your issues but I am curious. Was this car from a seaside climate or a northern state that salts their roads in winter? And, oh, by the way, where are you located and are other cars in your location rusted so badly?

Indiana probably uses salt to control icing on their roads. Thought it might be a northern car. I am surprised that rust is not an issue in south Florida. I am in the northwest corner, Pan Handle, and everything rusts around here. I am constantly doing something to prevent it on our boat and our cars.

Hope you did not get too much of the Irma devastation. We were just outside the bad stuff and only had tropical storm winds with very little rain.

Window seals on a convertible are relatively easy and complete kits are available at most of the online part outlets. Even with new seals, you may need to take the inner door panel off and adjust the tilt and throw of the window to get it to seal properly. There is a good video on U-tube that gives you what you need to do and it is short and easily understood.

Re: Top leaking need rust repair

use your best judgement when determining how much metal needs to be removed. if it's a spot or two here and there then just cut a couple inches past the rot and weld in the replacement panel. if the entire panel has rot everywhere then your time might be better spent cutting the entire panel out and replacing the entire thing. in your case I think you're better off just replacing the bad sections since the majority of your rear quarter seems to be fine.

I'd remove the entire spoiler and examine every spot that has rust and how far it spreads.

for the wheel well I would cut the flared section out completely since it would be easier to blend flat panels than to cut half way into the flare and then have to deal with aligning and blending the new metal with half of the old flared metal. the less angles you have to deal with the better.

the spare tire compartment is a lot easier than it seems, I had to do it on mine as well. luckily the ground effect hides the majority of the work so you don't have to kill yourself making it look nice.

I currently have to tackle the inner fender well on my car but it's not nearly as bad as your's seems. just remember to pull your carpet back and buy a welding blanket as added protection for your interior when welding panels that meet the interior. good luck
