HI. 86 iroc here. Automatic. When i press the button down to switch gears,the shifter WILL engage the tranny,but it will not "lock" into place on my selected gear.Im worried about bumping the shifter on accident while im driving. I tried looking at it,but i dont understand what makes it lock into place so i can fix it, Or maybe i just need a whole new shift assembly? Any help on what might have happened would be so greatly appreciated. It used to work just fine,not sure what happened. Thanks

 

Is the spring missing? Should be a spring to hold the hold shifter in the notches. Even then, you can move the shifter from 1st to N without pressing the button, it just keeps you from shifting down and into reverse and park.

 

Ill def. have a look into that. That must be what is going on.I wasnt aware that it wouldnt shift down or into reverse. Thats what had me worried.Any way you can tell me where the spring is supposed roughly located? Thanks!

 

Well, the shifter **** sits on top of a tube, with a plunger in the middle. The plunger pushes a spring loaded catch down and out of a series of notches. Pop the top of the console off, and you should see it pretty clearly.
