open loop for raceing

could you program a chip to run just in open loop all the time if just used for raceing,or how bad is it to run in open loop for extended periods of time?

U can run open loop full time or use it for racing.

It just does get more critical and your tuning needs to be more complete for any given application.

U are losing any type of correction for mechanical or electrical failures assuming your car is modified and everything else is tuned to a near 100% perfection rate :-)

Lots of folks here do it, I'm one of them.

If you have the time and inclination and can be made to work very nicely and might suprise you about how things work when your not trying to keep it all at 14.7 AFR.

Closed loop, is for the cat converters, it has nothing to do with engine performance, or it's life expectancy.

Like any tune (running open loop), if it's wrong, it's wrong, and the engine will suffer.

what do you mean if its wrong its wrong. If its not properly tuned?

I am correct in thinking that the car has more power in open loop, right?Or is it just because the engine is cooler. It sure seems to have a great more umpf when its first cranked up in the morning

What I think he means is:

If you don't have the fuel and spark tables (and others) optimized for maximum performance then even running open loop won't give you good performance. Running open loop allows you to run AFRs less than stoich. Most gear heads agree that running less than stoich gives maximum performance.

I run open loop full time and keep an LM-1 hooked up full time to keep an eye on the AFR...it's a manual feedback system.

Is this best done by yourself orcan you get someone who burns proms to do it?I mean is it a lot of trial and error, hands on,need to be there or could you do it on the phone through the mail.Is it hard for someone to get it right unless they can actually be there?MY chip has been reprogramed for all my mods.Would it still need further reprograming to run in open loop all the time. And what is a lm-1and where could i get one ,for how much

That's a loaded question. The answer depends on how radical your mods are, how much time you have to dedicate to the project or how much money you can spend having someone else dial in the performance.

In general if you have radical mods or plan to, it's worth it to start to learn tuning. Everything you need is on this site but you have to dig for it.

I mean is it a lot of trial and error, hands on,need to be there or could you do it on the phone through the mail.

Yes it's lot of trail and error when experience level is low. In my experience using someone else to tune via email or the phone is a drag.

Is it hard for someone to get it right unless they can actually be there?

If your mods are radical...yes.

MY chip has been reprogramed for all my mods.Would it still need further reprograming to run in open loop all the time.

Just one constant needs to be changed...temperature to go into closed loop needs to be set to the maximum.

And what is a lm-1and where could i get one ,for how much

i am running CL lately. i ran ol from 09/05 to 05/06. seemed the car ran better when i went OK back in sept. however that i believe was from lack of FP and lack of AE. when i upped FP 10% and upped AE 20% and reverted back to CL 05/06 car ran same as OL yet gas mileage was way better. cruise at 15.0/1 vs 14.00/1 OL. deaccel enlean and hyway mode disabled.

now what i did in OL was to run fueling tables at 122-124 blm. i would flip back to cl to verify 124 once a week. i have no cold air so my tune was developed as far as blm on fully heat soaked engine compartment and 70 deg environmental temps.

ps. with my prominator(awaiting) i should be able to flip CL OL with a click. same with timing tables. click click. pretty cool IYAM.

I don’t think $1F has a crank pw table in the code.

Re: open loop for raceing

I've been running open loop for years. With a good tune at cruise it stays at 14.7 just like closed loop. I run richer than that at idle and up to 1200 rpms because my cam likes that better.
