Texas Smog laws??
Ok, well i am from California but i might be moving to Texas this summer. (either Houston or San Antonio). I was wondering, what are the laws for the state? I currently have an 84 Z28 with a 305 and 700R4 transmission.
I want to go to a 350 or a 400. I was wondering can i remove my smog stuff? I know i prob need my cat though. Can i get headders without smog lines?
Any info would help

If you move to San Antonio, there is no smog check. There are, however, smog checks in Dallas, El Paso, and Houston, IIRC. In SA, they do not even pop your hood.
You should at least keep something that looks like a "cat". If a cop pulls you over, and does not see a cat, he can and will site you.

Will i need to buy smog tube hedders? Or will i actually be able finally afford some headers, because they dont check for that? I mean in Houston? So if they dont pop the hood, what do they check for other than you having a cat?
Do they hook you up to a sniffer machine?

Houston might aswell be CA, they do the hole nine: sniffer, safety, and underhood inspection, but then again I havent had my car inspected in about two years either(Well not the right way).

Well lets say that i do move to houston. If i register my car there, can i get it smogged outside of houston and bring the cert to them? Jus thinkin of ways around it.
Thanks for the info guys, it helps. I have been leaning toward San Antonio more anyway, but need to leave my options open.

I'm in the Dallas area, and here the "legit" stations do the under hood check, safety inspection (lights, brakes, leaking power steering, etc.), then you get the tail pipe sniffer. Under hood inspections can be very "casual", but you still have to pass the sniffer from what I've been able to find.
As for inspecting in a different county, you have to get the inspection done in the county you live in unless you can get the college student waiver mentioned earlier. I had never heard of that one before.
Hope this helps.

well techinically they look at your insurance to see your address and if you dont live in that county they won't do it. There is however a way around this, for example up here in CS there is like 60k students in the town and you fill out a waiver that says your a student that goes to school here and then they slap a sticker on it. Now you really dont have to be a student though because they dont exactly check your student ID.

If you could give me a list of what they check for under the hood, this would help answer a lot of questions too,
THANKS

OK, last question..... I think, lol. It looks like i am going to be moving to Housting, but not in Houston. So say i move to Katy, TX which is just outside of Houston. Do the houston smog laws count, or is it by county?

OK heres what I am almost sure you need. AIR injection(headers with air tubes), catalytic converter, and egr. There are probably more things that I missed but this is what comes to mind. Alot of my friends have late 80's cars and trucks and they tell me its almost impossible to pass emissions so if I were you I would just keep all of the CA stuff on your car. Oh and I live in Katy and I am supposed to get the same inspection as Houston so they do it by county. Good Luck.Oh and if you make it down here in time you should come to the houston gathering next month.

in houston we look for air injection, air pump & belt, cat, exhaust pipes, tail pipes, mufflers (can not be straight through, ie such as cherry bombs) pvc, breather hot air & cold air ducts, charcoal canister & hoses, fuel cap must pass pressure test, we do 2 speed loaded asm. it seems like im missing some other things, & of course the safety items, tires, wheels, lug nuts, wipers, mirrors, brakes, seat belts, master cylinder, p/s leaks fluid level & belt, & so on. although some shops don't check as close as others.
if you do come to texas, no matter which part you will need to get a form vr-30 at inspection to get your title changed & your tags.
you may be able to find out more here,
