The slop can be caused by several things. It could be some sloppy front end parts tht need replacing, but assuming they are good and the play is in the steering box itself, there is an adjustment in top of the box that U can tighten up some of the slop. There is a nut that U loosen where there is a (I think) a slotted screw (flat head screw driver) that U turn that moves the gears in closer to each other inside the box. I can't remember which direction u turn it to tighten or loosen. u have to be careful, cause if u get it tight in the middle where the gears are worn, when u get to turning the steering wheel it will make it TOO thight, and it will not return to center like U are used to.

Check the appropiate tech board on here and possibly do a search for "steering box slop" or "adjustment"

OOOPS.....sorry I misunderstood what U were referring to. Yeah, the slop in the tilt wheel is from a bushing in the column. Been there--Done that!

Bearings

Hey Mike. I think I am having the same problem. What bearing was it that you replaced? I first thought it was the torx bolts, but I took it all apart and the torx bolts were still snugly seated. I talked to a repair man but he told me that it would cost about $100 in parts and $150 in labor
There is no way in hell I was going to pay that $150 labor when I know I can break it down and put it back together myself.

Can you describe the kind of slack you had? In turning the car left in right it's fine, but when I tilt the wheel up and down to exit the car, I have about an inch of play up and down

Thanks

I appeciate the offer. Denn_Shah was able to help me break it down. I think I may need more parts than the bearings. There is a slotted cup like thing that sits on the race and I think it needs to be replaced. The Locking plate is somewhat out of shape so I'll have to try and hunt one of those down too.
If this gets to bee too much trouble I may just look for another at a bone yard.
