Dyno Day -- Sunday! 5/21/06 TODAY!!!

Don't forget that Thirdgen Dyno Day @ ARD is this coming Sunday--May21st --10am!!!

It does NOT matter, that U did or did not sign up, in the list here in this thread--that was just so we could kinda get an idea of how many to expect. If U want to Dyno, all U gotta do is show up, and let them know.

Probably just go by who signs up first when they get to ARD Sun morning--first come first serve I guess?

Even if U are not going to Dyno, come on by and hang out with everybody. We will be BBQing at noon/1pm

I'm going to try to get there around 10ish, i'd like to try to get things done somewhat early - there is an event with some friends that i will be going to after the dynoing

I pm'ed him letting him know that I was interested in datalogging but the odds of me having him tune were slim because I don't really have any mods. I told him that he might not come just for me. I don't want to waste his time if he has better ($$) things to do.

He he does come I may talk to him about adjusting the fan.

If I remember right, i remember Mike telling me that even to a totlly stock car--rewritting the chip is good for 20 to 30 + hp! Sounds worth it to me!!!

Gotta remember that the OEM chip is written to run the car lean and hot--so it will pass emissions--NOT FOR PERFORMANCE!!!
If U redo it for peformnce, U will feel a difference in your "butt dyno!"

To change the fan temp u have to go and rewrite the chip anyhow! Besides U got the lower temp contrls--- U don't need to rewrite the chip just for that!!!

Well, in the past few weeks I have bought a lot for my car; turn signals, floor mats, plastic pannels to go over the molded carpet pannels in the trunk. And I have bought a 15000 piece socket set (just kidding I think it was 250) and a craftsman steel cabinet from Sears. Not to mention some cool pistol grip needle nose plyers from Tractor Supply. And oh yea, all new hoses and 2 fan switches for my car. So, its not a good time to tune the car. If all of this hits on the same credit card statement my wife is going to kick my ___.

Back to the fan and the chip. The way I understand it, the second fan is controled by the chip. So, if you want the second fan to kick in sooner, you have to mod the chip. I've seen where some of the board sponsors ( I don't remember which one) will make simple changes like this for $30. Assuming I remember correctly.

If I datalog now, I can tune when the dust clears on the previously discussed topic!

20-30 hp? that seems pretty high.

Bottom line is that both fans have a power relay that can be grounded or may be grounded with a toggle swirch to turn on the fans when U want--don't have to mess with the chip

I may be off on the HP figures (probably am) but there is still a substantial increase in performance with a chip tune by somebody that knows what they ae doing over a stock one. Maybe Mike will jump in here, and we can ask him.

you know, i just thought of something that might be fun.
everyone that knows they are going, or if you think you'll go, post up the numbers you think you'll put down.

if i make it im thinking 170 HP & 260 torque to the rear wheels.

To get ready for the dyno day I changed my O2 sensor. Anybody need to use my super dooper o2 sensor abuser while we are there? (3/8 rachet beside it for reference.)

U know--- it's amazing what a new set of plugs, rotor and cap will do for your car!!!

U think U are running OK ---not missing/running smooth--not time for plugs and stuff by mileage or calendar, but I deceided to do them anyway, since we are doing Dyno day Sun. To my surprise, even though the plugs coming out looked OK--rotor and cap about normal--when I fired it up I could tell it sounded different/better. A little crisper response when U blip it --and a spin round the block confirms it--my "buttdyno" says its pulling harder!

COOL!!!

Anybody else doing any maintenance/tuneing for dyno day?

If I would have thought about it, it would have been interesting to see what a tpi airfoil and pulleys would do in a before and after test on the dyno. I may do these mods next since they are cheap and easy.

I plan to double-check / adjust fuel pressure and timing.

Just found this morning pressure was around 42, and timing had slipped back to around 4*....

Added them both to my pre-track check list.

well, in typical fashion as of late, I will not be there. ran into some problems tonight that involve arcing spark plug wires and spark retardation pointless to spend the money to drive up there and dyno it when I'm not getting 100% out of it.

i did

lowest HP WAS 177, lowest torque was 286
highest HP was 186 , highest torque was,... 440,.... hahahaha eat your hearts out

the 440 was a torque converter glitch, it probably should have been around 290~300, my other torque # was 309

so with about 180 HP & about 300 on torque with really nothing but a little tuning on the chip & a crappy dual exhaust,.. im happy.
a better exhaust & a new set of plugs i think will put me over 200 HP & maybe 320 or so on torque.
i kind of wish this had been done about 3~4 weeks ago before they changed the gas.

Could you guys share the feedback that Owen gave you. I couldn't hear him or see the graphs. Was it mainly chip tuning issues?

Hey, I had a really good time, and want to thank Owen and all the ARD crew and family for hosting the day.

I am pretty happy with my runs, was most interested in A/F ratio, which turned out a "tad" rich, but stable.

My numbers are pretty good for my "old and tired" motor, and despite the numbers I think it IS tired! Or maybe I'm tired of running the same numbers at the track

Made three pulls, car proved very consistent:

HP: 203, 201, 205
TQ: 274, 277, 276

My last run (205/276) was with the single snake schnozzle removed from the gutted air box. Owen suggested a freer flowing filter than the (clean) Fram paper filter I have installed.

I totally bombed on this one. Layed down a whopping 225 whp adn like 235 tq @ 5 psi
Then on my first pass, a nail slung out of my rear driver tire...adn it went flat . So, I got one pull for 55 dollars, adn got to drive home on a spare. FOund out my A/F ratio is NOT gonna cut it- so that alone was worth the trip. Now i have to spend MORE money figuring out a fuel system that can keep up with that big of turbo. Got ignition covered, it worked well..now, jsut gotta tune. 280 whp should be right around the corner with full boost adn proper fuel.

I had a good time, and met my expectations. Found out what i expected - the stock tpi airbox cost about 17hp / 13 tq over a larger diameter 'cold air' setup.

stock 98 ls1, with 01 exhaust manifolds, exhaust, 'cold air intake' - 317hp, 326 tq (running a little rich, could pck up a little more with some tuning).

The oil leak ended up being the plug capping off the old oil pressure sender, tightened it up and no more leak.

Also, the fan that first comes on is out, which is why my car was running a little warmer that usual.

Did U ask Owen about getting your other 2 pulls at a later date since U paid for them?

Owen seems like a pretty reasonable guy--I woulld think he would be willing to work out something with U!

I was pretty disapointed.

313 HP and 313 Torque were my best numbers (not on the same run).

I was kinda lean (14:1) on all the runs. I'm starting to suspect that dirty injectors are responable for the power decrease I have felt recently. Even set to full rich it ran just as lean.

Aside from that I determined that my y-pipe is not a BIG bottle neck. I previously determined that my air filter/housing was not a bottleneck. So it is probably my injection system that is holding me back. It's time to try something diffferent.

THANKS FOR HOSTING THIRDGEN DYNO DAY @ ARD!!!

AND A BIG THANKS JAY/JORDAN AND I CAN'T REMEMBER HIS NAME--THE VOLVO MACHANIC GUY--FOR WORKING THEIR BUTTS OFF ALL DAY DOING ALL THE CARS!

Appreciate your hospitality and the great price break for Dyno Day!

I think everybody enjoyed themselves. I know I did!

I didn't get a copy of my first run which had the highest hp, which was 244.xx
The second run was 240.6 hp and 283.73 torque

we were told that with a TH350 this results in approximately a 22% hp loss from the motor to the rear wheels. Assuming this that makes about 313 hp at the motor, which makes me feel better. The stock motor for a 91 L98 is like 240 hp, so that meas a 73 HP increase for all the $ and boltons.

Im looking at the graph of my HP and it reaches a max at about 3900 rpm and just stays there until about 4400 rpm, then nose dives. According to Owen (and the graph) the motor is running really rich after about 5000 rpm. I only did two runs because I didn't think a third one would make any difference, but aftwards I realized that we could have adjusted the fuel pressure down a bit, since I have a AFP regulator and a guage installed on the motor. Would have been interesting. I mentioned that to Owen and he feels the main problem is the chip tuning.

Solution to that is to go down there with a chip burning/tuning program, and rent the dyno for several runs and modify the program each time to try and achieve the proper air/fuel ratio. Owen stated he was confident I could gain 20hp doing this.

One thing the impressed me is Zaps increase of approximately 11hp just by opening his cutout. Ive been driving around with my cutout in my back seat for a couple of months. Im going to try and have it installed at ARD next weekend if they can do it.

Very interesting and fun meet. I was basically surprised at the level of all the cars HP as being low. Someone was speculating that the dyno is measuing low values. I have no idea and nothing to compare it to. It seems like a great tool.

I definitely second that. That was a lot of hard work on a hot day. And thanks for the special rate as well. I know you are not going to pay for that machine charging those kind of rates. I guess it pays for itself in a lot of ways.

If I overheard Owen right, talking to somebody else, the computer has all the runs stored in memory--Maybe U can call him and get the plot from that run, before something happens to it?
