E-10 and your carb=disaster in storage

Did any one happen to read the article in thursdays sports section about E-10 fuel and outboard motors? I dare say that any one in Harris county who has a carburated motor and doesn't drive it every day should take the information in the article to heart.
I don't drive mine very often and have been chasing carb issues for awhile now, this article didn't explain away the issues I've been having BUT it did tell me what the source of all the water in my carb was. THANX HARRIS COUNTY.
Quadrajet e4me carbs have vented floatbowls, and every time I took the air horn off the carb I would see globuals of water accumulated in the carb. The fuel filter is also looking pretty orange too.
I'm going to see if I can post up a summary of the article later if I get the chance but the original article was an intersesting read. It was in Thursday,June5,2008 Sporst section / Outdoors section-C7 titled "Chemistry not quite right" by Shannon Tompkins of the Houston Chronicle. I know the chronicle puts alot of their print articles on their web site so it may be their as well.

Re: E-10 and your carb=disaster in storage

The gas we have nowadays is sh*t........

If I don't end up selling my car, I might raise the compression with thinner head gaskets and run unleaded race gas only..... Probably VP or Sunoco 100 octane. There is supposedly no ethynol in race gas......

Re: E-10 and your carb=disaster in storage

One of the big issues I am having is all the rust like sludge build up from the old gas tank is now making its way into the carb. This car sat in my garage for almost 10 years with the old type of fuel and now the fuel system is turning into a true nightmare. Firts the gov. forces us to buy reformulated fuel that wasn't properly tested and it turned out that it poisoned the drinking water, now they make us buy fuel that is damaging the equipment that we put this fuel into. This is a problem that's begining to affect an awful lot of recreational motorcyclists also. All of their gas tanks are vented and most newer bikes have a coating from the factory also that is begining to break down. And how many people out there unknowingly have used fuel system treatments like Slick 50 or Zmax, or something simaliar that's possibly not compatable with this type of fuel?

Re: E-10 and your carb=disaster in storage

But you probaly don't let it sit for months at a time (if you can help it) and it has a closed fuel system (except for the carb). I have seen a lot of water in my Jet Ski's fuel the last year or two...

Re: E-10 and your carb=disaster in storage

If your running a 2-stroke jet ski be EXTREMELY carefule this E-10 problem is worse on mixed fuel than straight fuels. If your oil injector system still works then its not as bad but a lot of people remove their injector set up after the first rebuild and just pre-mix the fuel, and E-10 turns to jelly when it gets mixed with 2-stroke oil and sits.

Re: E-10 and your carb=disaster in storage

I never had an oil injection system to begin with.
What I have noticed is that the throttle shafts corrode and seize up if you are not careful to oil everything down after using it.

Re: E-10 and your carb=disaster in storage

2 Stroke models are the only ones that used oil injectors, this was to eliminate the possibility of begginers not mixing the 2 stroke oil in the proper ratio with fuel. Also people who wanted to buy jet skis were turned off at the notion of having to mix fuel so the manufacturers got smart and added an injector setup. Four strokes don't need oil mixed with the fuel so no injectors there either, and its more common to find four stroke jet-skis now than two stroke models.Something else to consider in maintaning the jet-ski is a cable luber from a motorcycle shop, it helps spray oil into the cable case which is not water proof, over time you'll get a white powder build up in the cable and it will want to stick, or even cause the cable to break. I prefer a spray oil called 6-n-1 over WD-40 or any others that I've tried. What are you using?

Re: E-10 and your carb=disaster in storage

Yea, come to think of it, when you remove a carb and let it set up without completely removing all the fuel it makes everthing mess up apon re installation. I usually spray some WD40 in there id i am going to have it sit up. After i drain it of course.

Re: E-10 and your carb=disaster in storage

Mine are all 2 strokes. But they are stand ups, which as performance models, generally do not come with the extra weight or an oil injection system. Also people who ride stand ups generally are not your average, don't know what they're doing, sit down riders.

Since I only ride in the surf I have to take a few extra steps to clean things up after a ride. But I've been doing it for 20+ years and have had very few salt related problems. I use LOTS of WD-40 on EVERYTHING after a through flush (inside and out). It has always worked well for me and it is easy to find.

But we are (I am) getting a little off topic here...
