Fuel Gauge Help!!!

So here's the deal.... I've been working on the wiring to my car and noticed that my fuel guage now reads full all the time . When I turn the key on the needle just pegs itself at past full... When I turn the car off it goes to empty like to should. My thought is that either the sending unit / float is bad (which I thought that would make it read empty all the time?) or that I have a bad ground somewhere either at the dash or back by the sending unit.. Can you think of anything else it may be and possibly where to start to determine if its wiring or a sending unit problem...?

Re: Fuel Gauge Help!!!

Under the car above the rear diff. is a 3-wire plug connection that goes to the sending unit in the tank. Check that connection first. Also is tank full? Float could be stuck. Drive car back and forth on a safe road and see if that helps, try to unstick it. Connection on top of sender could be loose. Sending unit could be going bad. Lot's of things possible, check electrical connections first. Since you have been working on wiring go back and check all that you have done/undone.Most likely a bad ground,or something you might have forgot to connect.

Re: Fuel Gauge Help!!!

I filled the tank all the way up two days ago and I dont think the float is stuck because I drove the car the other day all day. Up and down the driveway but the needle stayed pinned. Is it possible that the gauge cluster isnt far enough back into the holders for the printed circuit board? As for my wiring since its an 82 its a little different than your 85... I'm sure its in the same place just not the same colors... I'll take a look up there and see...

Re: Fuel Gauge Help!!!

Did you remove the guage cluster recently? If so that's probably the issue. Have to get in in just right. Also could have bent some of the connections. Not trying to be a d#&k,but always go back to the last thing you did when you have a problem, usually turns out to be the cause. I've done it enough times.

Re: Fuel Gauge Help!!!

I know this fact to be way true.. I had removed the guage cluster about 2 years ago and the gauge had worked since then.. The car sat for awhile and wasn't moved but it didnt have gas in it. I since moved the car and filled up the gas while moving it and the gauge worked then as well. Something happened since its been parked after i rewired the engine harness... Does the wires come threw the firewall and down the transmission cone or do they run threw the car... I am having trouble with my rear hatch pop switch..

Re: Fuel Gauge Help!!!

On 82-84 camaros the fuel level sender was wired with the tail light harness down the driver side of the car and out behind the left side of the bumper under the car to the fuel tank. These cars also had an aluminum wire harness instead of copper and if the harness was flexed it may have broken the wire. But as the other post says check your grounds and fuses also. You can use an DVOM and measure the resistance of the fuel level ckt. from the connector under the car to the cluster. There are also two inline connectors one in the left foot well and the other in the rear behind the storage bin on the quater trim.
