Texas Front License Plate Law has changed.....

Before today, if a plate was in the windshield, that was considered OK. Displayed to the front did not require it to be on the VERY FRONT.

Now? In the windshield, in Texas, is no longer adequate.

I heard about it on TV this morning, went 15 miles down the road & got pulled over for mine! I saw him making a U-turn as he was going the other way & I just KNEW he was coming for me. I turned, turned again & parked, then he found me. Since I was parked, he could do anything but tell me.

Looks like my hidden plate brackets will be going back on. Better than screwed into the nose, like stock.

Dunno what but it will be something like that.

Dont know how they magically changed the laws, it usually has to go thru some steps and be effective next phiscal year.

Not trying to be rude Steven, but he could have. But usually when a law changes then they give it a bit of time to sink into the masses. That and most cops have better things to do. It gives them a chance to check out who is in the car, and if they feel like it run your 28s and your 43 (license plate and history). Just be forewarned if you do recieve a written warning it might be best to put that plate on. Your 43 will then show that written warning and that is when they will get you. Just a little advice from a fellow thirdgenner in law enforcement.

Actually, he couldn't have. My park was parked & in a private parking lot. He could not have PROVEN that my car was the one he saw on the road. Once you (law enforcement) loses sight of the vehicle in something like this, it can no no longer be PROVEN that it is the same car, not who the river was, at the time of the infraction. I've been through that more than once & have never lost.

And it was purely a verbal & the Law revision is less than 24hs old. You HAVE to give a grace period, when things are not exactly announced. "We wrote the law 5m,in ago. Your busted." NOT!

Besides.....I already said I was putting my hidden plate brackets back on, so why bust my ***** at all?

BTW, Officer...You write a ticket for stePHen and write steVen on it? It loses all credibility & gets tossed out....

Lol, excuse me for mispelling your name. I do truly apologize. I'm just trying to help out a bit, I'm not actually an officer, I work in a jail and am fixing to go to dispatch. I haven't been through the academy. I wasn't trying to mislead you at all. I'm not busting your ***** at all either, sorry if I'm rubbing you the wrong way. I was just trying to say you could actually get away with it a bit longer if you didn't exactly want to put your plate on. I seriously hate the front license plate law. As for the not being able to prove anything on you part, I was merely trying to say he would use your license plate situation to pull you over and run your background or see if you have any warrants. I have seen many of your posts and know you know your way around the legal aspects of the law. I was just putting my in on the situation. It may have come across misconstrued and I apologize for that.

Well, this is crap. My 91 GTA doesn't have the mounting for the front license plate (and the mounting holes have been painted over). I don't really feel like fixing that.

Here was my solution (using scrap metal I had laying around), to not drilling holes in my holeless nose....

Mounted slightly under outward pressure, to slightly bend the plate forward & prevent wind speed from pushing it backwards & the bolts rubbing the paint. And I used to 2 existing bolts under the nose, so zero mod was needed to my car to mount it.

Mounted to a spare nose in my Dining Room:

Just went & found them.....Now to decide when to do put it back on.

crap. Is there a plate bracket out there that will allow me to slide the plate under the bumper at will? I don't mind riding with it, but it would be nice to be able to hide it at car shows

Re: Texas Front License Plate Law has changed.....

i have a feeling this isn't gonna change anything. maybe a few months MAX of slightly stricter enforcement then it'll go back to how it was, nice cars with no front plate will get over looked, but beaters/shady looking cars will get pulled over for it just to check for drugs or other illegal stuff. im not worried

I refuse to put one on the front of my bumper, looks like hell. Especially since i have a grille that looks goood, and will look like *** with a plate covering it, there isnt even a bracket that would work for mine.

That flip down license plate is incredible. Please if anyone here has done that or something similar post it up! That is an ideal solution for us Camaro owners who want to keep our grilles proudly displayed.

It was built by a guy here on TGO & there was a whole thread about it, years ago. I just happened to save the video for future reference.

It wasn't a changed law - but a clarification of the law by a judge. Just FYI. The law on the books is the same.

Technically yeah, but the wording will be different (i'm sure).

But before it wasn't spelled out. Call it different...Call it revised.

Bottom line? It is different & changed. Revisions are changes.

Re: Texas Front License Plate Law has changed.....

Judges don't write laws. From what I heard, there isn't anything in the legislature that would be making this law more strict, on the books.

BUT - if a judge interprets the law this way, then the law officers can enforce it this way because they have good reason to believe that the ticket they give you will hold up in court - regardless of how the law has previously been interpreted.

This is a great time to write our congressmen and get this front-plate law removed anyway.

Re: Texas Front License Plate Law has changed.....

recently while driving through Idaho...
the state trooper did that u-turn to pull me over for no front plate displayed
turned out according to his info Kentucky is one of five states not requiring a front tag
...so he said he wouldnt give me anymore problems seeing that there was nothing I
could do about it at that moment even though Idaho required the front tag...
...I should have said there never will be a time I will be able to do anything about it...
I didnt...I just got outta there quick before he decided to change his mind and give me more problems...and dont forget to be polite and say thank you especially out of state
....the problem is is when you are driving down the road and are from a state that does not require a front tag...the coppers can pull ya over for that alone...
its whatcha call a catch 22

that's very cool... I probably wouldn't go for the motorized version, not at three times the cost of the manual one.. but it scores high on the cool factor

Yeah it was a little pricey but I really wanted the motorized one so I looked around and got it for $129 with free shipping from ninosport.com which I realize is a mustang store but oh well.

cars look stupid with front plates[/quote]

Ouch!! A lot of my friends don't put the front plates on, I don't want to give the Police an excuse to stop me so I always run one.

I agree- personally I don't have to worry about that - we have no front plates any longer in TN - it is a waste of $$ to have two plates on one car.

I've never understood putting it in the window.

a) It's annoying as it tends to slide around on tight corners.
b) Dangerous as you wouldn't want that flying around in a car accident.
c) It attracts more attention than not having a plate at all does.

I use little clear suction cups to hold mine to the glass inside.

I have none of those problems. I use a sanding block to wedge the plate up next to the glass, and it holds it until I decide I want to move it.

The advantage it I can remove it in a moment's notice, like yesterday when I went for a photoshoot/car show. Once I arrived, I just threw it and the sanding block in the back seat

Re: Texas Front License Plate Law has changed.....

The law was actually challenged by a TX man that said his plate was in "plain view", just not on his bumper. Took it to the Texas Supreme Court. He lost. The judges stated that it had to be on the bumper. He was caught with some large amount of weed during the stop. He argued that the weed was inadmisable because the plate was visible.
"If the glove does not fit, you must aquit".

They can't enforce something that their state requires and your state does not except on Interstate Commercial Motor Vehicles. They can and do enforce stupid laws no one knows about on CMVs Ca is the worst for doing that.
