Hot Rod PC

I read Uglybronco's thread about being ripped off and
the hijack link in his thread CRACKED me up. Being bored
today i decided to show off the power of my HOT ROD pc.

HAHAHAHAHAHA
Too damn funny. It is for things like this that i stopped using winblows
14 years ago. Ahh the power of Linux.... LOL
I haven't been infected, phished, hijacked, etc...
Hell i don't even use anti-virus software although i do use a VERY robust
hardware firewall. Even funnier is that i am running on the same install
for the last 6 years 'updated daily' FOR FREE... hehehehe

I do keep a winblows install on a dual booted hard drive to play games on
but i keep it's network disabled.

Being a 'Hot Rodder' of course i do the same with my custom built pc. I
compile ALL my system/apps from source code including a custom built
kernel 'built by me' and a 3D desktop 'like a game' all running on a water
cooled system overclocked from 2.6Ghz to 3.6Ghz with a verified stable
top speed of 4.5Ghz. Needless to say it screams.
Core i7 920 D0 3.6Ghz | Asus P6T DLX | Patriot Viper 1600 6GB | Antec Quattro 850W
Geforce 8800GTX OC2 768MB | Dell 22" LCD | Koolance Exos2/Swiftech GTZ
GCC 4.4.5 | 2.6.38-zenx | Xorg-7.4 | KDE-4.6.x | Compiz
Can any of you do this... lol
Four desktops on a cube with fish inside

Four desktops on a fishbowl

Old video on youtube of cube rotation while playing a movie on one
desktop and running winblows on another. Compiz was pretty raw at the time
this video was taken

Indeed this is true for 99.99% of global internet and smartphone users.
The era of the internet and smartphones has enabled government and
corporations to know people better then they know themselves. The
fact that Google was seeded with Darpa/CIA resources is something
that Orwell would relish in 1984. Similar resources are now being
deployed on social networks and used to steer/mold consensus to
enhance 'certain viewpoints' is not an aberration 'Egypt'. Unfortunately
these same tools and techniques are being used not only by hackers
but also script kiddies who steel your identities and credit cards while
sitting in moms basement and laughing at those who venture into
this lawless frontier UNARMED.

P.S. No am not an anarchist. Just someone who learned the ropes from
the inside while working at Cisco.

good with cars and computer, im surprised you haven't integrated a 4 core processor ecu into your trans am, you could use the car cooling system to keep it cool lol
As for Linux coding, its only awesome if you know how to code programs for it. Its easier to just switch to OS X by apple

hehe...
If Apple wasn't proprietary i would probably run that too.
Anyone who knows anything about puters has to admit
OSX rocks. I've been building my own pc clones since 1989
and well EVERYTHING Linux is free free free. Am not a
software engineer. Am a systems engineer so, hardware is
my thing. I only dabble/hack in coding. LOL

P.S. sitting here watching Danica Patrick having an
INCREDIBLE run in the Nationwide race in a Jr. Motor
Sports chevy. Looks like she has a chance to win tonight
at Daytona. It would be nice to see Jr. as an owner get
a win and Danica's first win at Daytona.

Yea Wallace got into her and a cluster phrack ensued.
She finished 9th. Good run for her and JR Motor Sports.
It was nice to see Logano get a Daytona win.
It's always a good race when shrub doesn't win... lol

P.S. i know it is sacrilege to say as an f-body owner
but i am a Roush fan and of course a Jr. fan as well.

Yea i know but racing is racing and all my Fords
have been way faster/quicker then my GM's.
My first build when i was 16 was a 428 Cobra Jet
that could do 168mph. Ran 11.81 in the 1/4 in my
83 Mustang 302. My quickest f-body has been
12.3's before i broke it. Currently working on a
2001 Dodge Dakota 6.7L stroker we think will run
low 12's. Getting that one dyno tuned tomorrow
at Bomberas. Am not really a Dodge fan, it belongs
to one of my boys. Am just a racing fan with a soft
spot for my first build. And them new FR9 motors
ROCK.

I'll probably post a dyno sheet tomorrow for the
Dakota at...

Re: Hot Rod PC

I guess its time I jumped into this post. I also build my own PC's, though I always do budget buildups(buying middle of the line parts), so I don't expect my pc to hang with Jupiters.
I concur with Jupiter, that windows sucks. Unfortunatly most software is set up for windows, and so an old version of 32 bit Win XP is what I run. It requires reformats evert 6-12 months. In 10 years I have only ever lost data from 1 virus, and I have never run antivirus software or a firewall.

I seldom upgrade(maybe once every 6 years?), and have been using my first pc's(which I bought from Comp USA) micro atx case each time.

PC Specs:

Core 2 Duo 2 3.0ghz
6 mb L2 cache
4 gigs 1333 DDR3 ram (3.5 max supported by 32 bit win xp)
ATI Radeon HD 5670, 1 gig video memory
7600rpm, 255gig HD
DVDR drive

I have upgraded the Comp USA case:
1, 120mm 56cfm fan sucking air into the case to keep everything cool
1, 60mm 20cfm fan sucking air into the case right over the CPU
2, 90mm 25cfm each fans blowing air out of the case
2, 50mm 10cfm fans sucking air past the hardrive
I sealed up all openings with duct tape so only the fans control the air flow.

Here is how it performs on 3D Mark Benchmarks:

I overclocked the video card for 2005.

Now for a rant. I have an Asus motherboard, which is the 3rd and last Asus prodcut I will ever own. This piece of junk died after 7 days. I returned it to Asus, and they declined repair. They told me that "I must have spilled something on my KEYBOARD, which caused the MOTHERBOARD to short out". Then when I told them it was only 7 days old, they got mad at me for turning it to them, and that their 3 year warranty doesnt start until after the distributors 30 day return warranty ended. Then it took them 3 weeks to get it back to me from the time they declined my warranty repair. Luckily Newegg.com let me slide on the 30+ day return policy because Asus sucked so bad. I have owned 3 asus products over the years and 2 of them failed prematurely. I only bought this last one because people continue to say "Asus is great". Well, I say, STAY AWAY.

Re: Hot Rod PC

Loving the Flowmaster sticker... LOL

Asus was/is not the problem. When it comes to electronics it is the
birth place of the components that matters. Like most name brand MB
makers Asus has top end stuff and cheap stuff. The cheap stuff is
cheap because most of the components originate from China. The top
end stuff has GREAT Japanese components. The most common issue is
capacitors. Chinese caps SUCK. Japanese caps are like the energizer
bunny. I remember my first experience with Chinese caps when i
received 2500 IBM power supplies at the Nuclear plant i worked and
ALL of them failed right out of the box during tolerance testing. Mind
you these were IBM, BIG BLUE, name brand, gov. contract, LOTS of
profit$$$$$.

Also keep in mind fellas. Linux is FREE. You can download a LIVE DVD
and run it without even installing it just so you can check it out. You
can even install Ubuntu in winblows and try it out that way although,
why do that when you can run it right off the DVD. Personally i don't
use Ubuntu 'it reminds me of winblows it's so easy to use'. I use Gentoo
and build everything manually from source code configured
specifically for my hardware. As apposed to like winblows or Ubuntu
which is made for ALL hardware.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

Keep in mind also that there is a place for everything and well,
winblows is a must in a Corporate environment. I am not a Linux or
OSS 'open source software' fan boy like ALL my Linux buddies who
think ALL software should be free. It shouldn't. Capitalism creates
jobs, free software is just a hobby for some. People are more creative
when there is an incentive to better oneself.

Re: Hot Rod PC

Well you cant send 50cfm though a cpu case and NOT put flowmaster on it. That pc is exactly that, a master at air flow. If I ever bought an AFR car part, you know I would have that on the case instead :P

As for asus, it wasnt just their product, it was also their customer service. It was record setting bad. So bad infact that for the first time ever, I turned to the BBB and made a complaint. I had never been chewed out by a customer service line lol, normally its the other way around.

Jupiter, how does your pc do on 3d mark? I bet that I7 is amazing.

I have to agree with you on 'service'. It seems they ALL suck at that.
My 3dMark is nothing to write home about with this 1st gen 8800GTX
but at the same time it's pretty damn respectable with a little
tweaking.

Re: Hot Rod PC

By the way, interesting tidbit...
I use a home brew CPU thermal grease made from
a mixture of Arctic Silver + micronized diamond particles
'industrial diamond dust'. The Swiftech GTZ water block
was hand polished to a perfect mirror finish. Heat transfer
is AMAZING. That combination lowered my base temps by
8C.

Those hoses run from the Swiftech GTZ water block mentioned above,
to a Koolance Exos 2 750w water cooling system. It gets pretty hot in the
summer time in my home office and with the overclocking i need all the
cooling i can muster.

Dude, like Dark Ember it sounds like a nice tool. Nothing wrong with
that at all as long as it does what you need to do.

Mine on the other hand was used as a HOT ROD. I used to compete in lots of overclocking contest. It's a pretty expensive hobby though and
for the last few years i just rather spend that time/effort/money on my
car.

Re: Hot Rod PC

THE DEATHSTAR HAS CAVED...

Guys i have just been informed of some INCREDIBLE news for MS Windows and OSX. I have been involved with the Compiz project since it's inception some years ago. It is an open source Linux 3D WM 'window manager'. What microsoft windows calls Aero and apple calls Quartz. If any of you have ever seen Compiz in action you know that neither aero nor quartz can hold a candle to Compiz. A simple youtube search for Compiz will show you the incredible eye candy that is possible with Compiz. Anyhow, MS and Apple have finally come to the realization that our code monkeys have made a better product then theirs. I feel like i just been involved in giving birth... LOL

More specifically...
Currently they both use proprietary desktop technologies called DWM and WindowServer, however after some consultation with the compiz developers, it has been decided that Aero and Quartz for Microsoft (R) Windows [TM] 8 and Apple (R) Mac OS [TM] X Lion [TM] will be moving to will now use compiz as a base instead of DWM and WindowServer. Most notably this was done for performance reasons, but also because a number of the new interfaces provided in compiz 0.9x allow for some great new stuff to happen with both Aero and Quartz. With Quartz’ and Aero’s transition to compiz, we now have the full backing and support (and developer base) given to us as an upstream from the Apple and Microsoft developers. This means that compiz development will not be as slow paced as it has been over the past year or so, and it means that we will be making much more rapid releases. Much attention will be paid to instability of core and prototyping of great new bugs and misfeatures. With Aero and Quartz behind us, we now also get a number of key technologies which will be appearing in the newfangled computer desktop stack over the next few months.
EDIT:
It's worth pointing out that those of you who have Android pads or smartphones are already using our technology. Yes that's right, those fancy 3d graphics you see are direct descendants of Compiz. It's also worth pointing out that NONE of us will ever get rich from this simply because it is OSS 'open source software'.

Re: Hot Rod PC

I think you just lost me in that last post. Theres a lot of jargon in that:P Iphone? Whats that, I am still on a walmart go phone:P

As for the newest 3d marks, they all require wiundows vista, or 7 or 64 bit windows.... maybe its time I upgrade.....hmmm

Unless you are a serious gamer, your average pc on the shelf today is more then adequate for everyday use, such as netflix, web browsing, simple programs, and youtube vids. So for the most of us, the pc jupiter and myself have...... are kinda unnecessary overkill/fun

Oh Jupiter, I love the water cooled set up you have. A friend of mine had a nice 5" by 1 0"
"radiator" on the side of his tower with 2 big pc fans on it for his water cooled setup. I've wanted one since I saw that but..... just never brought myself to purchase one. Like you, if I got some spare bucks to spend, it goes to a car.

I need more stickers so I can rice out my tower

hehe indeed

It's not very difficult to insert a 'Dell, HP or, IBM' SLIC 2.1 into a
BIOS so that MS Windows thinks your clone is a oem pc and
install/update Windows 7 for free. Of course i've never done that... hehe
