Looking at Buying a Third Gen, any comments?
Been searching for a 1992 Camaro for about a year now, this is my first project car, and found this one the other day, hes wanting $2200 for it,
-Has MSD ignition upgrade
-Upgraded Carburetor and Headers
-New T-5 Tran
-Needs a battery
-Needs some body work and new paint (Going to paint it no matter what)
-Missing 1 of the Rims (Going to get better rims)
-Dash is pretty rough
My Phone was dead so didnt get any pics, going back this week to get more, he claims it runs and drives, and has a clean title. Ill post more info and pics when i get it.

By 1992, I believe all F-bodies had gone to either TBI or TPI; there were no longer any carburetors from the factory. If the car does have a carb on it, that would raise a flag for me; I would be wondering what happened to the original intake system. Unless you know your way around engines and automotive electronics, this may not be the best candidate for your first F-body. However, if you feel inclined to take on this project and find that there are issues you need help with, this board will be more than willing to lend an ear and give advice. Just remember that you have to take the good with the bad.

Ill definitely ask him why a carburetor was installed and if nothing malicious happen to it, if he still has the original system. Im not worried about the challenge, time, or resources (I work at a Car Dealership and have access to the garage and any of the tools, and many of the techs want to help me with this) I want to be able to make this drive-able as soon as possible, and make upgrades as i go, eventually doing a LS3 swap when i save up enough.
Is their other questions i should ask him, like anything you guys know can go wrong with these cars from experience, and things i should inspect before buying?

Buying a third gen is just like any other car. You need to remember that the car is over 20 years old. Having said that you should look for rust. The floor pans and battery tray are big areas for rust. Just give it a good look over and make sure things seem to be working correctly. If you dont know a lot about cars yet you could always see if one of your coworkers wouldnt mind going with you and look at it so you can get a good idea of what you would be getting into. You can fix anything with enough time and money but knowing what could be wrong up front is better than afterwards.

Be very sure that all the paperwork is in order. You don't want to spend your hard earned money only to find that the car is stolen. So yes, a clean title is very important. Ask if the registration is current, and if not, how much is owed in back fees. Is there any kind of inspection required? I know that when I lived in south Texas a headlight inspection was required. This was back in the Eighties so I'm sure things have changed. If the seller says it runs and drives, then take it for a test drive. See how the trans shifts, and if the brakes work. Unless the seller tells you something doesn't work, test all the systems, i.e. lights, air conditioning (important in Texas), signals, etc. Before you hand over any cash, make sure you are satis fied you are getting what you want!
