sooo, its not the fuel pump

yeah, story of my life... its not the fuel pump, but it still wont start... for some odd reason... I know its not the pump cuz while it was up on jacks, i had the plug wires off, so i reconnected them, poured some gas down the TB and fired it to make sure i connected the wires right, and i figured, ok, its gunna shut off after about 10 secs... nope.. injectors fired perfectly and she was alive!!! i didnt believe it, sooo i shut it off and re-fired, no gas down the TB this time... 1st try it fired... so i figured, YAY just a dumba$$ fluke and my car is fixed... so i drop it down off the jacks, turn the key and... nothin... crank, crank, crank till the cows come home... the injectors are about a year old so i know its not them... wtf????

Why couldn't it still be the pump? If it is only firing ocasionally then the pump is going bad. As far as I know some pumps will do that and others will just quit. If you have spark then it's a fuel problem and vice versa. You could have a bad wire. Mine has gotten fried once before. Follow the wire from the gas tank to the front of the car and make sure its intact.

it fired EVERY time i tried it up on the jacks, i had a couple fun revs too cuz i cut off the muffler (i wanted to hear it better ) i slowly applied throttle till i got to like 4500rpm then i let off, let it go down to idle, then i just jammed it to the floor and wrapped it up to like 5k and it returned to idle no prob.... it idled for a good 7 mins before i quit celebrating and shut it off. all the wires are fine, i checked those before i ran out and bought the new pump... i have spark for sure... could still be the pump though eh? crap...

ok im going to ask the dumb question to get it out of the way. If it was up on jack stands, im guessing the front end was still on the ground? If thats true how much gas is in the tank now that its sitting flat?

You should prb get a fuel pressure guage, or ask someone to come over with one ( i dont have one ). I would check the fuel pressure coming out of the pump, should be at least 38 PSI. Then if thats ok go down the line, and check it after the fuel filter.

He's got TBI, it doesn't run as high as TPI fuel pressure.

I don't know, I stay away from Toilet Bowl Injection. I think it's around 14-20 PSI, though.

Time to whip out that button.

Uhh........since you had it on the jacks already and already cut the exhaust........why didn't you just change the pump anyways? You're on a mission to get more power out of that thing, and your more than likely going to need the extra fuel anywho....

So it was the pump after all
Well Look at it this way you shouldn't have to change it again for a long long time if ever

So Get that exhaust on there and let head out to Firebird and tear it up

how hard was it to get to the fuel pump once you had the exhaust cut?

congrats on getting it fixed.

it was about 4 hrs, i halfway dropped the axle, just took off the shocks and springs. Id do it again if i had to... just tedious and aggrivating trying to finagle the tank down with a non-flexible filler neck
