160 tstats rule

Forgot how well they work. Anyway, just thought Id share that I installed one. Now the car runs cooler and got some power back.

Also, trans starts off in 2nd gear, or shift into 2nd gear waaaay too soon. So that partly explains the no spin, bogging 15.1@90 run a few months back. The other part of that run was the non shifting into 3rd.

Anyway, wanted to share

Re: 160 tstats rule

yeah it really sucks having a car with no grill in the desert. I put a 160 t stat in my GTA last month as well and the temp stays under 200 as long as I dont get stuck in traffic. I have a hypertech thermomaster chip as well that makes the driver fan come on earlier. I notice all the time the car bogs down once it gets over 210. It LOVES sitting at 180-190! I am going to get a fan switch as well to make the 2nd fan come on earlier too.

Re: 160 tstats rule

thats my hang up with this state, its too damn hot under the hood in traffic, i dont drive from like 3 til 7 except down the street, its too hot, i put a 160* in and it did good for a while but it ran around 180* swapping it was a definite improvment over the 220* i was running

Re: 160 tstats rule

how difficult is it to change on a third gen? I replaced the water pump on my car the other day, and now the temperature is going up, so im guessing my t stat is goin bad. And do any of you guys belong to a local club around az? other than azfba?

Re: 160 tstats rule

its really easy, make surte your cooling system isnt under pressure, unscrew the 2 bolts on the water neck, break the seal, bend it outta the way, replace the tstat and put it all back, just put a new gasket on the housing, theyre like 2 bucks at checker
