Re: New in town....
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe in 91 the button was located on the tonneau cover itself. The original location (before I pulled it out) was routed to the trunk, up the tonneau cover, and to a plastic housing right next to the roof latch release handle.
Oh and I frequent those sites lol. Just got a big box o parts from thirdgenranch I'm actually prowling around for an ac/heater control panel. Yeah...
EDIT: Yeah I looked at a diagram, and yes the switch is mounted in the tonneau cover. Just, for some reason they decided to take it for a couple laps around the trunk first. Another headscratcher courtesy of GM

1) in the rear seat on the drivers side to release the pin that goes through the tonneau cover and holds the back of the top down.
2) manual hard tonneau release cables are located behind the rear seats
3) electronic release for the hard tonneau is in the center console where the hatch release normally is between the window switches.

Re: New in town....
i havent owned a 3rd gen for more than a few months, and have noticed that the yard mentioned, and the one a few blocks east of it, on buckeye, are the best 2 for us. i always run into around 5 camaros there.
and one of the bigger yards, south of that, on broadway, usually has a few also.
i was at that yard on broadway a few weeks ago when we had that big rain storm, and i was in dire need of getting a part for the cadillac, and was in a super rush to get it fixed before it got dark, because i would have gotten towed if i left it there... and sure enough, finally ran into a trans am... after i had not seen one in the 2 months i had it. it was pouring down rain. "WHY MUST I FIND YOU NOW?!?!"
the rest of the yards are usually a waste of time looking for 3rd gen parts.

Re: New in town....
Greetings Mark,
I live in Sierra Vitsa area (SE of Tucson, just west of Tombstone) I will be in Phoenix this weekend for National Guard drill. My folks live about a mile away from Metrocenter. I usually stay there. If you respond to this I may consider driving my stock carbed 86 Z28 up there so you can get eyes on what it should look like. My car isn't in the greatest shape either, but I have plenty of upgrades to ready to go when I have the time.

Re: New in town....
So, for those of you that don't know, the trunk of my car has been totally rhino-linered. Yeah, it's awesome. Not only did the cover the truck itself, but also the wiring and everything else. Sooo, I am left with this;
On top of that, the trunk latch that is in there is of course the wrong one. Now, I have to figure out what all these wires and connectors do... I have a part coming, I bought it on a whim off ebay. Turns out I think i may actually be the right part lol. It was listed as a "trunk motor." I don't think its actually a pull down unit persay... We'll see. I'll take a pic of the connectors, maybe someone can help tell me what is what. There's also a relay in there. One connection supposed to be a cutoff, so that when the trunk is open, the solenoids for the tonneau cover won't operate.
I'm pretty sure there is one connector that is actually missing a wire. Sigh.

Re: New in town....
ok then. So, I bought a part on ebay, actually on a whim. It was listed as a "trunk motor"
Turns out, it is a pull down unit, and it is the correct one for my car, being as it's a late 91. Motor, bracket, gears, the whole kit and kaboodle. Not a bad score for 99 cents. hehehe
Now, comes the fun part. It seems the wiring in the car is set up for like 3 separate connections, whereas the unit has only one.
In the car, there's this;
And these connectors;
Now, this connector goes to this switch;
Which I know tells whether the trunk is open or not. Two things. One, this switch, and the corresponding connector, is intergrated into the pull down unit. Also, there seems to be a wire missing.
Three on one side, two on the other.
Here's the backside of the unit. That is the wires to the same switch I just pictured.
From what I can tell, this unit has all the connectors joined into one. Which is awesome, now I just have to figure out the pinout on that one connector... Any ideas?
Two more things. One, is something supposed to go here?
Also, this may sound dumb, but where the &*% is the button to pop the trunk?? I have traced wires all over the place, and I cannot find anywhere where there should be a switch. It's not in the center console;
Thats the one place where everything is actually intact and unmolested. There are no wires going to there. If I have to run my own wires, and install a switch that way, what wires would I use.
This car confuses me lol.
Oh and here's something, just for funsies;
Yup.

The pull down still works so you don't have to slam the trunk

This website has all of the wiring diagrams and pinouts and body diagrams for a 1991 / 92 Camaros. Even a the convertible body diagram. You should find everything you need here to figure out that basket case of a Camaro you have taken on. Enjoy!!

Re: New in town....
Alright, well I have an idea then to add my own trunk release, kinda like what drknow is saying. As soon as I get *this* fun little batch of wiring figured out I'll get started on that.
When I plug in the connector that fits, (that is a five wire connector but only has two wires) the relay I showed you makes this god awful buzzing sound. That's kinda, weird...
Hey so, after you use the key or whatever to pop the trunk, then I'm assuming that switch is lifted, and the pull down unit moves up? Or does it move up after you actually lift the trunk lid open?

Re: New in town....
Sigh. So, I got a new AC/Heater control unit. The rotary valve in mine was shot. Unfortunately, the supply line isn't getting any vacuum at all. So appearently the vacuum leak (I knew I had) is way worse than I thought.
Which is worse, an electrical wiring nightmare involving hacked up wiring and incomplete circuits, or a vacuum system nightmare involving hacked up lines and incomplete loops.
I'll get back to you on that one.

Re: New in town....
Vacuum leaks are easier. To find them, start the motor, and then take an UN-LIT propane torch, turn it on and play the gas along your lines. The engine will rev or sound different when the gas is sucked into the leaking area. Dont move too fast. Veeeerrrryy slowly.

Yeah, I've heard a few suggestions along those lines, actually. Propane sounds about the safest and easiest, though. Have to give that a shot.

Parts of it needed replaced anyways.
I needed to replace the heater core.
I needed to fix the HVAC blender box. Turns out it seems to actually be fine, for the most part.
And yes, it was like a turquoise color. No thanks lol

Re: New in town....
lol, I don't think so though... I put a vacuum pump on the pines going to the box. Diaphrams operate, doors move, and vacuum holds. A vacuum gauge on the supply line coming from the engine doesn't budge though. Ditto that with the vacuum line going from the carb to the vacuum advance on the distributor. I'll find it, one of these days lol
