Finally got WinALDL to work, I think
After cleaning up my old laptop I was finally able to link up to the the cars computer and get data. Now I just have to figure out what I'm reading.
Even with out the computer data I can tell it's running extremely rich at start up. I mean eye burning can stand to be near the car rich. Then after it warms up it's better but still stinks if your standing near the exhaust.
What's a ESC failure? I just got the data so I haven't look in the helms yet. I also got a Vats failed message on one of the capture downloads.
Anyway I was able to get data. whoo hoo

VATS failure is normal, because your car doesnt have VATS.
ESC is code 42? That means you've disconnected the timing connector in order to set the timing. Its normal.
About the rich issue, thats normal. Mine was rich too and took a bit of work to get it driveable. It just goes to show you how tough it is to get a custom chip over the internet. Bring the car down to us as soon as you can, or you can wait till your party.
Congrats Dwayne!!

Thanks Kevin. I'm trying to locate a trailer and take a day off maybe the last week in June.
I was able to get data but only partial info and only in the raw form.
I never got spark counts, O2, BML or INT readings.
Flag data was populated.
Sensor data was partial.
Error code boxes got checked. BTW what's MALFFLG1 - 4 mean.
The dash pop up showed some readings but the readings didn't change with throttle movement(increased revs)
This was all checked with the motor warmed up and the super rich smell decreased. I tried both open and the 10ohm res. on pins B to A. I got the same data from both.
I am running windows 95, could be my problem.
Any body tried The Turbo Shop DataMaster scanning software? Looks like you can get it for $95 and a $60 cbl.
Looks like I'll be searching the archives for WinALDL info

I bought my software and cable from Ease www.obd2.com
Looks like the price has gone up, its $315 now...
Anyway, its windows based and I havent had any problems. Nice graphing features. Pretty easy to output the data so you can open it in excel for analysis. Unlike many other scan tool programs out there, they make stuff for cars other than GM's or GM OBD1 or 2 only. Good tech support if you need it.
I totally gave up on all the free stuff. I never got a single one to work properly. That stuff must be smarter than me or something...

The cable is made but when I went to hook it up to the ALDL on my car the pin letters are in different order.
The 2 trans ALDL schematic says G is the data and the 1 trans ALDL says E is the data.
I'm trying to hook up my 88 IROC 165 (what else could it be?).
What pin on my ALDL is data and what pin can I use to get the +12VDC shown as F on the 2 trans schematic?
I'm assuming A and B are the same.

I used the cig lighter for 12vdc tried to connect but couldn't link to Craiges sftwr.
I'll go throught the list of linking problems but I'm ready to purchase something like Diacon, or Ease.
Chris you said you have Ease. That's my first pick. It's $315 compared to Diacom plus @ $579 or $299 for the none plus gets the cble and maybe "cough" upgrade to the plus later
The Datamaster stuff has beta software for our applications but unless I geta discount I'm not into being a "beta boy".

I like it. I do believe they have a 'demo' available so you can see what it does. Or I can send you mine. Its totally useless without the cable, but you can get an idea of what it looks like and how to use it. If they talk to you about the more expensive 'pro' version, etc. just forget about that, just stick to the cheaper version. Theres only one difference, and you dont need to worry about it.
Glad I'm not the only one who couldnt get this 'free' software to work...

for craigs software (for my 165 ECM) on my laptop (w98) I have to use the "restart in msdos mode" or it will not work. I cannot get it to work in a windows window or by booting directly to DOS (pressing F8 at startup and selecting dos). It works 50% of the time but at least I didn't pay much for it
I believe the cable I have for craigs software will work with the beta datamaster software so I plan to test that out since it has 20 free trials.

This is what I have so far trying to hook up to Craig moates sftwr. using the 2 trans special.
I used the cig lighter to get +12vdc.
With power comming from the cig lighter and hitting 1 (no beep) I get activity on the screen but it ends with a "no link, try again"
This the info I see on the bottom of any of the linking screens:
Sending responce: 80-56-1-29
Receiving echo responce0,,6,0,0,0,0,0 (different each time)
63-byte datapack (should stop recvg at byte 64 (C/S) when succesful)
1:0 2:0 3:FC 4:FC same......same till 19:FC (sometimes different each time)
cksum: 0/64 (differenent each time)
Last byte from com port: 29
In the read me info Craig states the 'last byte read' on the lower side of the screen should flicker between '00' and 'FC'. If something else "This could be an indicator that you need a modified hardware interface, one with a +5V signal (through your 7805) to the DSR pin of the COM1 port"
What is the checksum suppose to match too? Should it look like 64/64?
It seems to get a data stream echo and data stream return but no link.
Well like he said it ain't no plug-in-play baby.
