GM called many different engines "Vortec" including some of the TBI's! The true Vortec heads everyone talks about is the ones from 350 truck engines from 96-present, excluding the 99+ LS1 engines. The 305 Vortec heads arent as good as the 350's.

Yeah Kevin I did not know what was Vortec with Gm's engines. Don showed me the Numbers for the true 350 Vortec heads and that's what I got. But as for the 305 Vortec What needs to be found out is this 305 Vortec flow more than the stock 305, What would be the gains. Would it be worth it for that person staying with a 305 engine.
The last time I was at Don's shop, Don, Kevin and I looked at some numbers for a 305 roller cam with Vortecs. Kevin found a cam, I think it was a Crane 260, but Idon't remember exactly. I was looking at Kieth Black 10.8 to 1 pistons which would give about 9.5 to 1 with the bigger combustion chambers of the Vortecs. Kevin fed the flow numbers Don had gotten from the pocket porting, and the cam specs, and his desk top dyno program estimated the power @326 hp. I presume that is at the flywheel, not the rear axle.

The pistons are cheap, a cam is not to bad either, yeah the base is the most expensive part, The labor could be kinda shaky. Guess that would depend also. I guess this is a budget set up thing, for a person wanting more sport out of there 305. Of course most of us would just rather get a 350 block and go that route. If I were to ever buy another 3rd gen Camaro and if it was in in low mileage and being a 305 I would look into this route if I was looking for performance for a low cost.
Well, I still await the Dicky base myself as it is up there in price, kinda tuff to get that much money together at once. I am hoping to see atleast 400hp out of the motor with the set up I will have. Kinda hard to know till it is all together, and depends how well things turn out. I was greatful to get the Super Ram and cam and Slp tri y's@ Vortec heads for a great price.. So that really did help me get started, I still need to get some roller rockers, and im looking into the Gold Race Extruded Billet Aluminum by Crane. All in time some thing will be put together. I want a good running car, Im not all out to be looking to be the fastest car out there.

I think if I was going to build a 350, I'd just get Trick Flow 23* heads. CHP got a bit more power out of them than the pocket ported Vortecs, and at just under $1000.00 a set, they would probably be less expensive than Vortecs, pocket porting, and the ScogginiDicky base. For a 305 their isn't a lot of choice. The Votecs are probably the best heads available for them.
