A funny thing happened while in line at FedEx to drop off some orders yesterday. I'm standing in line behind a kid that has what looks like an outboard motor wrapped in cardboard and clear shipping tape balanced in front of him. I glance at his hair. Hmm, reminds me a bit of Jay. Look down to his FedEx form Jason Arebelo. So I punched him in the arm. Shook his hand and chatted for a few minutes. It was the 4th Gen center console he was shipping. He told me he is planning to start selling American parts to Japan, and import Japanese parts. He wanted to know if I had a business license, (yes). I suggest he get one too. I told him, even though 99% of his business will be Internet based, you still want to have the license. In my case it is especially handy to purchase items for resale and avoid paying the 8.25% LA Sales Tax on items I purchase, re-package and sell. Also it keeps the State Board of Equalization happy that I collect and pay the Sales Tax for CA sales I make. I also suggest he set up an account with FedEx and ship using their Internet site. It makes it much simpler, just print the label, slap it into the adhesive-backed plastic sleeve and drop it off along with the shipping manifest. No waiting for them to weigh it, sign it, charge your credit card.
