Camaro/Firebird aren't exactly dead....
Okay, I was doing a little searching on the new Pontiac GTO. I wanted to see the specs on the new car.
It's pretty much the 4th gen. Firebird/Camaro only with a new body. LS1 V8, 6 speed trans, rear wheel drive and so on...
I'm guessing GM felt that a high performance car would sell better if it looked more like a euro-sedan.

It also has an IRS! I'm not sure if G.M. wanted something that looked more Euro, or if it was simply the fact that Lutz loves the Menaro, and Bringing it in as is is easier than trying to do a new body right away. I also think the pictures of the Menaro that I have seen look a lot like the Mustang. Maybe they think the car has to look more like a Mustang to sell.

If you look at the pic on the Pontiac web site, the GTO looks a little like the Monte Carlo only with smoother lines.
I agree Bret
Looks like a Monte Carlo SS.. The Monte Carlo SS have rear wheel drive? The new Gto kinda looks like that certain model Acura in a way also? and a Honda 2 dr. But this Gto is planted with a ls1!! and a option of a 6 speed!! Would really need to read into the specs of that 6 speed, Is some ratio's going to differ than others like The T-56 and the aftermarket 6 speeds and etc? rear gears and so forth.. going back to read more about the new Gto, But still Thats not a F-body is it?
I don't think they have assigned a body type to it. It might be a variation on the "Sigma" platform. The f-body was strictly built in North America. The GTO comes from Holden in Australia. It still shares a similar size/performance with the f-body. With the irs, I think it is what the 4th gen should have been in '93.

If it wasnt IRS, it would have the 9-bolt rear end. And parts would be a lot more plentiful for us.
