You can install any engine that originally came with that model year or...... you can install a newer motor if all smog equipment is installed and properly working.

For example, I have an '89 IROC Conv and installed a '99 LS1 from an SS. Not only did I have to have all normal smog equipment but also had to include the SS plastic gas tank which has the evap system connected to it. I also had to make sure the ECM was working properly while showing no error codes. It was a nightmare but worth it in the end. A newer LT1 may be the way to go as long as you keep in mind that you will have to have the car approved by the DMV Smog Referree if you want to do it right.

Right now I've been looking into Jasper engines. I need to give them a call. I like the class two engines, but they don't have a good warranty. Their stock replacement engines and performance class one engines come with a 3 year/ 75,000 mile warranty. The way I see it, if anything comes with a warranty that good, it must be good stuff. The only difference between stock replacemant and class 1 is a better cam. I heared, though, that you can substitute parts for better ones (of course at an additional cost), so I know already that I would want better rods, a crane cam, aftermarket (smog legal) heads, and the hypereutectic pistons. Just leaving all my options open still.
