Order a cage or have one built?

Should I order a pre bent kit or have it custom made?

I would like to use the moly material.

Unless you are an accomplished welder I would check with the chassis shops in your area. They will do it right and you will have no trouble getting through tech.

I can weld but in this case I'll have a moly prebent or custom cage TIG welded in.

I also was thinking of having the main hoop go through the frame. Can this be done with the roof on? I guess you could elongate the holes and the top plate would cover the larger hole.

Just to stir up trouble, why dont you run the number before you put in the cage? Does that thing go fast enough to even require a helmet? Good thing I'm moving soon!

More info please......

Do you need a cage or a bar.

Is your car T-top.

How fast do you plan on going.

I have gone 114 MPH in the 1/4 mile so I have the power. That was w/out using a 150 shot.

I'm not sure what kind of cage is required to go 11.99 or faster but that's what I'm trying for. I have T-tops. I don't really want to have a cage above my head, only a loop behind the front seats with bars going forward from shoulder hieght to feet area and rear bars. I think this is an 8 point bar set up found on SSPE and other web sites.

The new 2004 NHRA rules for T-top cars is

12.00 or slower no roll bar / roll cage

11.99 to 11.00 Five point roll bar

10.99 to 10.00 Full roll cage

9.90 to 7.50 Full cage with knee/dash bar and chassis cert.

If you install a full cage you must have a window net, fire jacket and more, even if you run slower than 11.00

I was looking at something like this.

I read that it's best to install the main hoop through the body into the frame. Can this be done?

You have no frame in the area to weld the roll bar to a Camaro is a unibody car. In the NHRA rule book you must weld the bar to the rocker sill area with 6"x6" plates and no its not legal to go to the sub frame connectors.

Thats the info I need. It's easier to install with plates as well.
Cool!

I guess I'll get something like the Comp Eng kit. I think I can tack weld the thing together and have the welding completed by someone with more experience.

Now the question is mild steel or moly stuff?

I can afford the moly stuff it's the install with TIG welding that will be $.

Hey Jerry, feel like doing some tig welding?

Dwayne

One of the good tricks you can do with plates to make the bar a very tight fit is hole saw a hole the size of the bar in the body under the plate. Fit and tack all the bars, slide the plates out and lower the bar into the holes so you can weld all the upper joints then jack the bar up and slide the plates back in and weld all the plates in.

Jerry

Also I have a mandrel tube bender at home next to the Tig welder.
