Test only smog
Hey, I'm looking for an "easy-going" well-mannered smog tech here in southern california. I know Don knows one, but I havent been able to find a name or address yet. I think it would have to be test only, althoug the car is registered in a basic smog area, so maybe it wouldnt. My smog equipment is all intact and functional, but there's a little problem in the form of 8 smoothly bent tubes. Any help would be great, thanks!

Can you explain that a little more (the 8 smooth pipes)?

Why didn't you just get headers with an E.O. number? They're very abundant for V8 3rd gens.
BTW: No matter where you go, since you're in a basic area, you'll just get the standard Two-Speed Idle Test, no Dyno for you my friend.

Naft, I can't help you. My connection retired 6 months ago. Things seem tight right now. you can always go the route of posting on the exhaust board for someone in a smog exempt state to sell you a legal EO tag popped off a legal aftermarket set of headers for your application (as long as they are shorties you have right now)

Hey...it's no big deal, if the one you go to won't smog it, go see a different one.

It seems there are two types of smog techs. The ones who look for the correct smog equipment and don't worry about CARB EO# if the air tubes and egr is hooked up. Then there are the ones who will try to fail you on visual if it isn't stock and they just don't care about CARB EO#. There may be some out there who see headers and want to see a CARB EO#, but I've never heard of one.

oh well, I'll just hunt around when i get back north, right now im in the middle of finals and dont have the time to cruise around trying to get it smogged, and i have plenty of time to wait. the funny thing is from the way the guy put it he didnt even care if the headers were legal or anything, and that if i had just quoted an EO number for any set of 3rd gen headers(without any proof whatsoever) he wouldnt have given a rat's *** if it were for those headers or not.
thanks anyways guys, and if it comes down to it ill go for what dean suggests. dont think it will come to that though.

Every station I have ever gone to I must always be getting the guy with a hard-on for the rules.
I always get hammered for my Thorley headers on my truck. They are an original tri-y set that Doug made years ago before he stated tacking on the EO tag to the headers. I have the EO sticker and they still give me a hard way to go everytime.
The last guys even hammered me for the Holley TB that looks pretty much like the factory unit but chrome. There is no EO for that but I keep the original box label showing it is a type 1 smog compliant part and does not need an EO.

I wouldnt go to the trouble of getting the actual plate from a legit set, but if I were to have the number written down somewhere would that probably pass?

Just tell the smog guy they're a set of SLP 1 3/4", because that is (basically) what they are.
