Please help a new guy
Hey,
I need to do a tune up on the GTA i just bought.
Please let me know if these parts and numbers sound right.
1989 GTA 5.7L stock (for now)
delco plugs R45TS
MSD cap 8433
MSD Rotor 8410
MSD Coil 8225
MSD wires 31229
Please let me know if these numbers are correct. I did alot of searching and this is what i came up with, but i want to make sure because i saw some other options.
oh, last thing.
Are these the only longtubes that will not have problems with clearance? Will the wires and plugs work ok with this setup below also?

thanks
Mike

Re: Please help a new guy
You can't use long tubes on any smog motor in California. The set you linked to have no provision for a.i.r. tubes. Long tube also will not work with a cat in a Third Gen, there just isn't enough room under the body. You must have a "Y" pipe connecting the left side to the right side going to the cat (cats in the case of a dual cat car) under the front passenger floor. Even if you installed the a.i.r. tubes on the long tube headers, I don't think you would have room to get a "Y" pipe to cross over to the cats without having the pipe running under the tranny. You will also have ground clearance issues with both the long tube collectors and any crossover pipe you can fabricate.
The good news is that Don's headers will work, and pass smog. There are a bunch of cars in this club running Don's headers and making 350+ hp at the rear wheels on smog legal motors.

Re: Please help a new guy
Russ,
thanks for the response but i know all that all ready.
I dont want to buy shorties if these long tubes and ORY-pipe cost the same as Don's headers and new cats. Not sure how much Dons cost but everything else i was looking at (shorties + cats) was about the same price as long tubes and ORY.
I dont mind using long tubes but i just dont want any problems with clearance. If these long tubes will clear fine, id like to use them but i dont want to have to bang on anything to make them fit other wise i will just go with shorties.
Id like to know if those long tubes will clear without issues.
Does Don have a website?
Are those the right part #'s to buy for plugs etc....
thanks

Looking at the installed photos on Hawk's Website, it looks like you might lose a little ground clearance with their long tube set-up.

Magnaflow cats and a genuine AC Delco O2 sensor. Dont get a Bosch.
I dont have a clue on part numbers as I just walk into the auto parts store and tell the flunky behind the counter what I want. I have about 4 different cars worth of parts on my car so I cant keep track of all the part numbers.
