what can cause false/erratic tps reading

I recently developed a sputtering problem under light to moderate throttle. I found a split plug wire, changed it and it helped a little but the sputtering remained. After checking/resetting everything my tps would jump from .40-.60 then at times 0, I bought a replacement and the problem persisted. Frustrated I put on the old tps.... in the .7X range and no longer erratic. Also when the tps was reading funky it would idle 2k in park and 500 in drive struggling to idle.

Whats causing this? ps I broke the head of the allen bolt for tps and wanted to know how to remove it..
