Performance and Smog

What combo's have you guys built that have "legally" passed smog, CARB numbers and such. Was it a dual/single cat, and is one better than the other from a smoging standpoint. Mainly looking for 305 tbi/tpi combinations as the car is currently a 305 tbi (1990 camaro). Looking to build up to something around the 300 - 350 hp range or more if thats possible . Thx.

Re: Performance and Smog

sorry to say with 305 thats going to be hard to do as the heads suck and intake exhuast are you looking fwhp or rwhp because 300-350 to the wheels in 305 tbi kinda of a tall order unless you go turbo so its all how much you want to put in then you relieze your buddy has 350 and same mods and making alot more then you

as far dual cats vs single dual cats flow more then i dont get why you want to compare for a smog stand point lol its a v8 not a prius lol

but for your 305 your going to need heads cam intake exhuast and a good tune not sure power wise where that would get you tho you should look in the TBI section

Re: Performance and Smog

Think im aiming towards fwhp, this motor for the time being will be N/A, but off in the far future supercharged maybe? Dual cats would burn cleaner id assume to, got a lil caught up in my head/keyboard with that one lol. I guess i left my questions a bit vague, sorry about that.

Just trying to see what you can do to these motors before having a car that will barley/wont pass so i know what the limits are. If anyone has any 350 motors i wouldn't mind seeing what you can get away with those in CA either. None of this is set in stone (350 or 305).

Re: Performance and Smog

you can get to those power levels and still remain smog legal theres youtube videos and cali guys on this forum of these guys pulling 400+hp and still remain smog legal
your major issue really is cost and intake TPI CAN PRODUCE POWER but its going to cost alot of money... SUPERRAM is also smog legal and can produce power but there hard to find..MINIRAM it cost money and have egr may fool smog tech might not it isnt smog legal and will set you back $1000+

350 would be the best option and you can make power and remain smog legal

a bolt on headers full exhuast chip intake mods maybe a cam if its in your budget l98 i think puts around 240ish hp to the rear wheels so that puts you close to fwhp range and you still remain legal
why you want 300-350 fwhp as a goal ?

Re: Performance and Smog

I figured 300 - 350 would be realistic for a n/a smog'able 305 motor. But if more than that can be made, awesome. Thanks for the help.

Re: Performance and Smog

I passed smog:

The Short Block:
4-bolt main roller Vortec "880 casting #
TRW forged pistons .030 over (357cu. in.)
ZZ4 powdered metal rods
Cast crank offset ground
.020 deck height
Compression 10.6/1

The Heads:
Edelbrock E-tec 200's 90989 #
Fully ported by "Jerrywho"
Flow #'s 270/218 w/o pipe
Milled to 60 CC's
Dual springs good to .600 lift 135/360 pressure #'s
With 10 degree locks.

Camshaft:
Crower cam 225/232 114 LSA (installed on 110* intake centerline)
Lift .585 intake .550 Exhaust
Roller rockers 1.65 intake/ 1.5 Exhaust
Cloyes double roller chain
Melling 55A oil pump
Manley head bolts and washers
Genuine Chevrolet valve cover

Intake has been heavily ported with Siamese runners.

Exhaust Dyno Don headers and Y-pipe
dual cats Magnaflow hi-flow carts and 3" cat-back to Magnaflow muffler

300-350 hp not going to happen with a 305.
Pretty sure a supercharger is not legal in CA.

Re: Performance and Smog

86 Iroc
10.25-1 $1000 cheapie cast bottom end shortblock
AFR180 head/Eddy performers will work but suck in comparison
lunati 256 voodoo cam
Ported TPI top to bottom
Smog legal shorties
Tune by TJ Wong

Never dynoed runs super strong
Will pass legitimately at ANY smog station anywhere in SoCal.
Lots of combos claim they will but smogs were done under the radar..either tailpipe or visual didnt cut it.
