Re: Going rate to install door skins?

In my area wrecking yards still have a few thirdgens in them. Do the wrecking yards in your area not? It would be much cheaper to pull a door and do a repaint than to buy a door skin and pay an actual restoration shop to install it. The metal is probably 20 gauge so you have to take your time and really space out your spot welds in order to not warp the door skin. Probably take an entire afternoon's worth of time waiting for the metal to completely cool in between welds. Copper (or even aluminum) backing plates would help dramatically.

The problem is most of the doors I see in wrecking yards around here (Inland Empire) are worse than the ones I'm trying to replace. Also, I'd like to keep the orėginal door shells which have the VIN stickers and date of manufacture which is on the driver's side door. I already have NOS GM door skins. I bought them many years ago knowing they would eventually be discontinued some day.

From what I've read about installing door skins, it doesn't seem to be a very complicated procedure. Grind off the old one and crimp the new one on. The only spot welds I see are up top on the inside and a small tack dot or two on the sides. However, I'd rather have a professional do it because I don't want to screw up on NOS door skins as a learning curve.
