Smog question (removal of a.i.r.)

If I put on a new cat that doesn't need the a.i.r. function to work more efficiently, would I still be able to pass a visual inspection? My dad keeps screaming no at me, but I still just have to ask. It would be really nice to be able to get rid of it.

All cats on thirdgens must use a 3-way catalytic converter (single cat at least). That means you need the air tube on the cat, which also means, in order to pass the visual, you need the air tubes properly hooked up.

Uhmmmmm...

George, its 3-way plus air (or oxidation). The 3-way is fixed as part of the catalyst itself. It does not need the air to operate, most converters dont. Just makes them a little more efficient.

But to answer your original question, you will fail visual without the AIR system installed and working. No way around that whatsoever, dont care what sort of emissions components you put on the car. The smog tech will look in the book (if he has to), sees AIR listed, looks for it. Its not there, it dont pass visual.

You are not allowed to remove *ANY* original smog equipment from your car. Thats a federal law, punishable by jail time and/or a heavy fine. The only exception is installing 50-state legal parts that have a CARB exemption order. Otherwise, you cannot remove any smog part from a car that has to pass a smog check in California. Your dad is right.
