shaking in right front...

My right front is developing a habit of shaking lately. I thought at first that it was just the wheel bearing being a little loose, so I tightened it, and everything was good for a little while. About 35 or 40 miles later, though, it started doing it again. I've been told it could possibly be the tire balance? I didn't think it was that, because the wheel doesn't shake all the time. It mainly shakes when I turn a certain way. (The slight turning to straighten car out when changing lanes, mostly). It's starting to get a little old. Can anyone help me out here please? What could it possibly be so I can check it out?

If it improved for a little while after readjusting the wheel bearing, that would be the first place to check. Maybe one of the bearings is going bad. Buy a new set of bearings for that side or check them, pull the grease seal and check the inner also. If that's not it it could be a list of things. Maybe the bushings are bad in the control arm.

I would still start with a wheel balance to be sure that isn't the problem. I would also have the wheel bearings repacked or replaced. A loose wheel bearing shouldn't be just tightened up--repack it with grease first and check for damage. A used bearing should spin free and have no slack. Is this more of a vibration that a shake? I ask because a toasted bearing will vibrate on and off as you turn left and right. So, a right bearing would make more noise when you turn to the left--from the added load. If that is the problem, bearing replacement is needed.
