Torque Arm

I am new to the Camaro scene. I just picked up a nicely loaded 82 Z28 that is in need of some TLC. I do not understand the function of the torque arm. What role does it play, and do you have to have it. Are there trannys that cannot be used because of it? I want to switch to an overdrive tranny*4L60 or 4L60E depending on what motor I decide to put into it. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

the torque arm locates the rear end, it wouldn't be there if it wasn't needed. you can use aftermarket parts that mount the forward end to the floor pan

Help with straight line traction. Less movment that the stamped factory one. Check out Spohn. he make a mean torque arm and will make one that bolts up to any combo

Thanks for the replies. I took a look at Spohn, it described the fuction of the torque arm. I am comming from a mostly Off raod background, and there we removed everything we could to get the axles to float around. the Z is quite different.
