Rear Drum Question

I have an 82 Trans Am CFI. My Rear Drum Brakes are giving me problems. Here's the story:

My Dad and I replaced the Brake Pads in the Rear Drum's. We bled the system, and for some reason, the pedal went WAAY low when bleeding the system. We found a Brake Line that pretty much had it.
After that, we bled the system again. It was much better. So I took off for a test drive, and did pretty well, but the pedal was going lower as I used the brakes.
So I turned around and went back to the house, then I heard squealing and grinding coming from the Rear Drums as I came to a complete stop. By the time I got back, it was the way it was before I replaced the pads and the brake line.

My dad thinks it's the adjustments for the Drums, which sounds right, but I want to ask you guys and gals first.

If I remember rightly, the drums adjust themselves automatically when you brake whilst travelling (slowly) in reverse. Someone with a better memory than me want to confirm/deny this?

I did do that a while back, and it worked for a while, but not long. Maybe I just need to do it again.

the best way to adjust the rears is to pull the drums & adjust them manually. the adjusting screw is at the bottom of the assembly, between the two shoes. turn the screw until just before the shoes hit the drum (less than 1mm space). it'll take some trial and error. you might also want to get the rear drums turned by a mechanic if you see any grooves in them. oh, and make sure you got the car in neutral & the parking brake OFF when you're doin rear brake work.
