Brakes

Hi All,
I've got a 86 Iroc with original callipers.
Trying to install new rear pads, but I can't push the piston in! Are the callipers shot? I'm Using a C clamp
Any help would be Great.

Thanks

if the e-brake mechanism is in the rear caliper(i'm sure it is) then you need a special tool to twist the piston while pushing it in(the e-brake has a screw in the rear of the piston and you need to screw the piston in around it) you should be able to get the tool at any larger(and some smaller) auto parts store

Yes, the e-brake is in the caliper itself and you do need the special tool to do the job.

There IS a recall kit to do away with that old screw-in style caliper piston, and will take care of this problem. Do a search on "caliper rebuild kit" and you should get the part numbers for it.

I ran into the same problem when I did my first rear brake job on an 86 Plymouth Conquest. The rear brakes were disk brakes and I needed to get the piston back into the bore of the caliper. I found out that it has to be twisted. The piston on this car had grooves that I could grip with pliers. So I twisted it back into the bore by hand. It was hard as shyte. The second caliper I took to a brake shop and the guy used the pro tool to get the piston back. He charged me $5.
