steering loose

when driving my 92 z28 I have to turn the steering wheel more than an inch in the direction I want to turn to, before the wheels will turn.Is there any way of making the steering more positive by adjusting a component or does something need replacing?

you can tighten the steering box. from the top there is a stud/nut. the stud has a hex key in the center. loosen the nut. then turn the stud clockwise one full turn. then tighten the nut back down. see how that does. also check the idler arm and center link for wear.

thanks for reply.
When i turn steering wheel the lower and upper intermediate shafts turn, and will get the car jacked up to see if the pitman arm is responding properly. if so i suspect it is a steering linkage problem.
when you mentioned the steering box do you mean the power steering gear?

yes. what the steering column and pitman arm attaches to. the pitman arm is a non wearing component. you may be thinking of the idler arm. that is on the passenger side. attaches to the frame and centerlink.

I took my car in to local american car garage, and they said the steering box is worn. I can have it adjusted with shims or have it replaced,.All the rest of the steering components are ok.

So are you going to replace it? Would it fail an MOT as it is now? If you are going to replace it, where has them in stock in the UK?

Ill probably have it replaced, the garage has a shipment from the states every couple of weeks, but they might be able to get it from the uk.It would probably be an mot failure depending on who does the test.
