Rear disks....I think I have the wrong calipers

I'm not quite sure, but I think the 9-bolt I recently put in is from an 89, my car is an 84.I reused the calipers, and the brakes have been making awful noise, getting extremely hot, dragging very badly and wearing very unusually.Could this rearend require the PBR calipers?? Is it even possible to bolt the wrong calipers on the backing plate???

You shouldnt even be able to bolt the iron calipers from a pre 89' to the backing plates on an 89' , but the whole setup backing plates and all should be fine on just a bare 89' housing, can you get us some pics ?

I'll try to get a camera in the next day or two. What would be invovled in putting the '89+ rear brakes on, I've heard they're a bit better.

Possible cause of trouble with brakes

You may want to check that the caliper is centered on the rotor. Being sure there is the same amount of clearance between the inner pad and the rotor and the outer pad and the rotor.

Another thing you may want to check is the inside diameter of the rotor (where it meets the axle flange). Then measure the outer diameter of the axle flange. The axle flange must, of course be a bit smaller than the rotor face diameter.

I recently installed disc brakes on the rear of my 91 RS. Even though it was a Baer Touring setup, I had to shim the passengers side out so the caliper was centered on the rotor and I had to have the flanges of my axles turned down to 5.9" to ensure adequate flange to rotor clearance.

Just a couple things to check-
Good luck-

its probably ur ebrake! my ebrake likes to stick when i pull it, and i have to get under and jiggle the cable to get it loose. its all rusted and stuff. does the same thing urs does when it sticks. gets hot and smells and burnt the backing paint off the pads..
