Rear disc brake options??
I have a 3.42 posi rear end out of a 92 B4C...however it didnt come with any brakes (just the backing plates). What are my options for getting brakes on this thing? My car currently has drums in the back. Im thinking I can either go with a stock 1LE brake setup.....I have heard 4th gen brakes would work...or go with aftermarket like Baer or some place. Eventually I will get the 1LE front brake upgrade...but I dont have money for that right now. My rear end is going out already...so I need to do the swap SOOON. So what is my best choice.....as far as price, performance, and availability? Am I going to have a hard time finding a rear brake setup for sale without the rear end included? THanks a lot
stock junk yard rear disc option.....my gm performance rotors were that much alone.
a baer touring kit for the rear with stock 11.9" rotors and the stock pbr caliper is roughly 800.
brakes are expensive for the good stuff, the stock disc is fine...just find a stock rear disk setup for cheap. i know i pulled a set off of a 92 at a junkyard for free just in case i ever need the part.
i believe new the calipers are roughly 200 from gm so it pays to get one used.

will brakes from a 4th gen work with a thirdgen rear end? Seems its easier to find junked 4th gens than 90-92 thirdgens

If your looking to put on 4th gen brakes, go for the 12" 98+ brakes. I'm putting an article together on the upgrade. So far it looks like $550 for all the parts new, and that includes NEW PBR calipers from GM.

Here are your options as far as I know. All of them are pretty much the same performance wise. Around 12" rear rotor and a single piston caliper.
Junkyard OEM find - 91-92 rear disc brake setup. They were the same on all 91-92 z28's, 1LE's and B4C's. Price will depend on how cool your local junkyards are. Could be anywhere between $200-$400, maybe even higher if they suck (like the ones around here). You're right about it being hard to find just the brakes (not the rearend). But you can still find deals, im fact there is someone selling a complete 91z disc rear in the classifieds for $300. The OEM 91-92 disc setup will fit 15" wheels and higher.
New 91-92 disc setup - AndyZ28 makes a complete kit to install 91-92 z28 rear discs on your 9 or 10 bolt rear. Price is $700+. New parts. Will fit 15" wheels and higher. Very nice kit!!
Baer rear disk setup - Comparable to AndyZ28's OEM kit, but comes with the 'next generation' PBR calipers (over the OEM setup). Price also $700+. New parts. Baer says they will fit on 9 bolts, but they have horrible customer service, and if you do have any problems they probably wont help you. Not sure if it will fit 15", but 16" is a guarantee.
Junkyard LS1 find - There is a tech article on swapping LS1 rear disc brakes onto a 10 bolt. Price here will also be determined by how cool your junkyards are. I got my set for $250 (good deal!). Andy is making a kit for this pretty soon that will allow you to swap the LS1 brakes onto a 9 bolt. Not sure if it will fit 15", but 16" is a guarantee.
There are other more expensive, more insane kits out there. All of these are under $1k. If you want more stopping power for drag applications, you might want to check out Wilwood kits (look to Global West). I've heard they have a rear 4 piston caliper setup that works well for dragracing. If you want more for roadracing applications, be prepared to spend ALOT.

baer also has a new "touring" kit for the thirdgen that will be coming out shortly that uses the new eradispeed rotor and a bracket that extends the baer (stock pbr) caliper.
A great big thankyou goes out to baer for making 4thgen rotors fit on our assembly and then designing a bracket to push out our caliper just enough to fit the 12" rotor as well as charging us 900 for a few hours worth of bracket fabrication, 1" larger rotors that are already sitting on the shelf, and using our stock calipers but marketing them in a way to make us think they are new! definately well deserved.
