No you can't hurt them by playing with the settings. Its fun to lean on them and then try to pull them back out on the different settings. When you put them on the car they recomend you set everything to the lowest settings then spin the compression up 3 clicks and test things for comfort on bumps- you want things firm but not rattling your cage (Standard reds & yellows of course have this valving adj.) then set rebound enough to control body roll and brake dive (control- not eliminate/ you want to slow things down enough to eliminate bobble in the chassis) too much and tires will start to skip over bumps in corners and braking causing loss of traction and ground out over consecutive bumps.

Yes Counterclockwise softens/ Clockwise stiffens.

No
Within their normal setting range, you are able to click them back and forth full clockwise then full counterclockwise then back again and again to the hardestest and softest settings with the standard minimal effort normaly taken to click just 1 higher or lower setting- at that force- things will stop adjusting after so many clicks. If you force it after those points of course you might be able to break things- but that would take a noticibly higher force effort to turn it past the high and low points. you'll know when you can't go further each way- it will just come to a resistence point and don't force it past.
