New Gear box/ PS hoses....whining like a Bastard when hot.

I have a question. I installed my new gear box the yesterday, it's from an 86 Trans Am and I put it in my 84' Z. Everything is fine except the thing is whining pretty bad when it gets hot. It's not leaking a drop and I'm pretty sure I installed everything correctly. It looks to me like the pressure hose and return hose for the PS fluid only go one way, The return line being farthest from the radiator. I used crappy fluid for the swap ( Wal Mart Brand) because it was leaking so bad before I was not going to put the $3 STP/Prestone in every time it leaked enough to whine.

What do you guys think it is? Bad Fluid, air bubbles in the fluid, getting hot too fast? It whines pretty loud. The belt and everything appears to be fine, it did not whine before I did the swap and I did not touch the belt or mess with the pump at all, so I don't think the belt or the PS pump is loose.

Can someone please post a pic on which line goes to which outlet on the gearbox just in case? thanks.

Could be the pump going, or maybe you didnt bleed it. I don't know if the fluid would be that crappy that it would break down that fast, but it could happen.

Bleeding it...

How do you bleed the system? You are correct, I did not do that.

Jack up the front of the car so that the wheels are off the ground. Turn the ignition key to unlock the steering collumn (do not start the car), and turn the wheels back and forth, from lock to lock, several times. You may need to add more fluid after doing this. This should flush out any air bubbles in the system. If its not significantly quieter after doing this, there may be a problem elsewhere (bad box maybe).

The fittings will only go one way, so if its hooked up you have it right.

The box is in terrrific shape.

I bled the system today and it still does it.

I have an extra pump that I am going to clean up tonight and paint. If that does not cure it then I must have got a bad box. I'm would think that pumps have a shorter life than boxes do?

Could I have burnt my pump up from driving it with air in the system? I drove it like 12 city miles so I was turning a lot. Could the box make the pump produce noise if it would restict the fluid flow from the pump?

Everything works great except for the whing when the steering is warm after I have drove it for approx. 5 mins.

I'm going to install the pump and hope for the best. If it's the box I'll be pretty annoyed cause they are a pain to put in in the driveway.

If you drove it that much, you might have burned it up. I'd look at that first; if the steering feels tight, the box is probably ok. Even if it feels a little loose, you can adjust most of the slop out of it.
