Tire Siping

Has anyone had this done to their tires? If so, were there any negative effects? Click here for more info.

This process involves a machine at the tire shop that makes very small cuts in the tread rubber. The purpose is to provide a better grip on the road in adverse weather conditions, like snow and ice or rain. It does make a small difference, however, just like anything, you must give up something somewhere, in this case, your new tires don't last quite as long as the tread/wear pattern has been changed. Personal opinion here...dont spend the extra cash, I did it a few times, not a HUGE difference.

i'd pass if i were you. i've known people who have tried it with no luck and i'm certainly not letting anyone cut up my tires and then charging me for it.

i'd sure like to know who the smart one was that came up with that idea?

I hadn't planned on having it done, but it seemed like a good topic to bring up since I couldn't find any mention of it on this board. I figure the tire would come like that already if it were truly a good thing to have done.

People do it for types of racing that require running in the wet. Generally, street tires on the street don't benefit too much from it. If you're running race tires on the street (no I'm not talking about drag radials) you can sometimes make them tolerable on wet streets that way.

I've never had it done myself; but I know a few SCCA type folks that have, for certain specific situations.
