Rearend Gurus enter here
I just bought a rearend from an 85 Camaro. I got the entire rear for $100. All I really want from it is the diff. It has a posi and I didn't want to drop a load of cash for an expensive aftermarket unit. BTW the SLPs were/are backordered, I looked into that option. So, I got this rear. One of the axles is snapped, but the gears and diff look to be in good condition. My question is can I have this diff rebuilt? I have not done any major rearend overhaul as of yet. About the only things I have done are replace axle bearings and axles in stock type applications.
I don't know what brand of diff it is either, neither did the seller. The gears that were on it are 3.73s with GM stamped on them and GM part numbers. It is definately a limited slip unit though. Another thing is the gears that are on it now are 7.5". Mine should be 7 5/8" for a 92 rearend. I would prefer to keep my 3.42s since I have no overdrive with my TH-350. Can my larger ring gear bolt to this diff?
I once read here about a video that someone recommended to newbies to rearend work. Anyone know where to get this video? Any books on rearend work that are useful?
Sorry to be so long. Thanks in advance

Well, I looked into it a few weeks ago, I bought the thing on line. I got an email from one of the guys over there and he told me they were currently out of stock. So, I got a refund. Last week I emailed them to see if any were available and another guy told me I should try again at the end of this month. Maybe they have some more, maybe they don't. My thinking was that since our cars are dead, then how are they going to get more units to sell. Thats why I bought this diff when I had the chance. Hopefully, more units will become available to those who want them. Best bet would be to email SLP and get the scoop from them.

At one time, they had the diffs, but there was some other part they needed that they didn't have; the cross pin, or something, I don't know.
But you're right, sooner or later the take-offs will run out, and a good thing will come to an end.
The 7½" and 7-5/8" are the same thing. They all fit all rear ends of this model, including the ones in these cars, A & G bodies (MC, Cutlass, etc.), S trucks, B bodies (Caprice et al.), the list goes on. Go look up gears for them. http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com...=28&cat=GM+7.5 You can put that carrier in your rear and use your existing gears if you want.
The limited slip that comes in those is .... better than some, but not very stout. It can be rebuilt. http://www.auburngear.com/aftermarke...lt.asp?page=sk Instructions are here http://www.auburngear.com/aftermarke...structions.pdf
Here's another way to deal with it. http://www.auburngear.com/aftermarket/drex/

UPDATE
Oh well. Turns out it was an Auburn differential. I took the diff down to a good drivetrain shop to inspect/rebuild it and they found it to be bad. The cone on one side was broken in half and the other side badly cracked. Not to mention the cones were badly galled. So much for a cheap diff.
Moral of the story is DON'T buy used parts!!!
