Power Steering Pump
Power Steering Pump
I have an 87 IROC-Z that I haven't been driiving too much the past couple of years, it has 50,000 miles on her and I have maintained it well the 16 years I've owned it. The other day I was driving home and the steering completely locked up or a few seconds. This happened a couple of times which to say the least isn't too pleasant. The steering is as tight as a drum, so I suspect the power steering pump must be going. Has anybody else experienced this in thier F bodies?
Thanks

No, the belt is fine, and all the front end components are in perfect condition. I get no belt noise (squelling at all ), the steering just completely freezes up and the pully on the pump is turning.
POWER STEERING PUMP RESOLVED
The problem with my steering locking up was not the pump, or any other front end components. It turns out some jerk at the factory left a socket on the retaining nut between the intermediate shaft and the steering box. I guess after 16 years the socket worked it's way off the bolt head and was catching inside the shaft stone guard at times. I guess I can be thankful this didn't happen at high speeds.
