Do you have rear discs? Rear drums? What year is the car? And how doesn't it work? Does the handle come up too easy? Does the car not stay stopped if you put it in neutral and pull the e-brake?
well, its an 88 Gta trans am with disc all around. The e-brake doesnt come up at all, but thats because the guy I bought it from said it broke when he had it and that it was gonna cost him 150 bucks at the dealer to fix. So, instead he had them do something to it to keep it from getting loose and falling down on the driveshaft. I loosened the bracket but it just falls down. I had an auto and never worried about it. Now, I'm switchin over to manual so, its definatley gonna be needed. Thanks

Well, if it has an automatic, chances are the recall work was never done for the rear discs. Recall work was only done by GM for 82-88's with manual transmissions. Technical Service Bulletins were issued for 82-88's with automatics; meaning, the person had to PAY to get the fix.

That fixes the e-brake and "rear disc brakes not working" problems. BUT you may have a compound problem if your handle doesn't pull up at all. I'm assuming the center parking brake cable (e-brake handle to adjuster) is busted. Might as well replace the left and right parking brake cables (after the adjuster) too. That center brake cable is a bitch; mine snapped on me- the handle still pulled up though... it just pulled up very easily since it wasn't pulling on anything.
Also, there are two brackets in the trans tunnel, one on each side. The left cable and right cable each "ride" in these. They're about a foot away from the adjuster bracket. The actual cable sits in them, not the outer sheath part. If the cables fall out, the adjuster bracket falls down and grinds on the driveshaft.
Hope that helps... if it doesn't, let us know.

hey tom can u help me out ? i've got a manual 89 2.8L, disc/drum.
I bought the car about a week ago, and the parking brake was one of the first parts to need fixing. well a week later i still haven't found an auto parts store that carries it, just NAPA, and it'll take them a week to get it in. The cable is broken right at the base of the ebrake handle, the connector piece just sheared off and now half is on the handle and half is on the cable, still sitting there on the trans tunnel
some good that does me right ? I've replaced the shifter cable on my GTA/auto, so i figure this will be as big a pain as that. I've been searching for a long time though, and can't find anything on the procedure.
anyway, Q's
Where did you buy your center e-brake cable ?
How much was it ?
Do you have a part number from that store ?
Any tips on the install ?
