88 gta. whats up with the posi?
my 88 gta will sometimes make a bad [slipping/vibration noise when doing burnouts. ive noticed sometimes the drivers side tire wont spin......whats up with this?
Stuart,
If you are certain that the problem is isolated at the rear end then it is quite likely that your 15 year old posi unit is tired. If it is an Eaton style then the "vibration" you characterized the sounds as would be the clutch pack slipping (which some would argue you may or may not feel/hear). In any case, a dog leg is a sign that the posi is tired. I've had a similar case with my 89 IROC, and recently pulled the cover and took a peek. With both wheels up, and one of them locked (i.e. with a brick), the free wheel should turn with some effort (about 80~100 ft/lbs torque near the center to be exact). With both tires free they should both rotate in the same direction and with ease. I found my problem to be with the awesome stopping power of my rear brake "drums." Yes, its a joke... but my drums were part of the problem. One side would bind, and only the free tire would spin. Anyway, with that fixed and some fresh gaskets/seals and fluid, all seems to be ok on my car for now.
Also, at least as per what I've read on this site, the pass (right) side tire is likely to spin more than the drivers.
Good luck with it!

the borgwarner is fully rebuildable and parts are not obsolete by any stretch of the imagination, u can get anything u need from www.9bolt.com , u can rebuild the posi in ur rear end. i know the noise ur reffering to my 9 bolt makes the same sound when it goes one wheel. ive got a pretty good idea of waht it is. since the 9 bolt uses a cone type posi its differnt then the 10 bolts design. this is where the noise comes into play... the 9bolt uses cones that put pressure on the spider gears, this creates the limited slip effect. theres enough pressure to maintain 2 tire traction in a straight line, but also just enough not to give 2 tire traction around corners. this makes the car a lot more drivable then a totally solid rear axle or a spool rather. but what happens is the cones where down from turning and the "one wheel" peels and that creates slop in the spider gears due to the cones being worn and having too much clearence, the sound comes from the spider gear walking back and forth i believe. i dont know if u noticed this as well, but when u go from reverse to drive there is a little slack in the driveline, almost like a bad U joint. not sure if urs is worn that much yet. but mine is. 9 bolts are expensive, but the life of 1 9 bolt is probably 5 10 bolts so id say in the end the 9 bolt is cheaper and less a pain in the ***. plus the resale value of the 9 bolt is probably higher then a 10. the rearend in my car has had plenty of abuse and beside the worn posi, the gears still have .008 backlash wich is perfect and show no signs of wear what so ever.

that sounds great.......i want to keep the factory unit, because it has done so well. [ except for this it has been a great rearend ] and i hear nightmare stories about changing rearends and nothing working when it comes to brakes etc. once again thanks.............
