Anyone running the S&W cage or connectors? Reviews?
Anyone running the S&W cage or connectors? Reviews?
I was looking at Spohn's cages, made by S&W race cars and found their own web site on the internet and it looks like they make some hardcore parts.
Here's what I'm talking about:
http://www.swracecars.com/f-body.html
It's a combination of a front crossmember and subframe connectors, bolt-in, or something like that. Looks awesome, I'm sure you could weld it up too if you wanted.
Anyone know anything about it? Have it? Installed pics?
Also, is anyone running an S&W cage?
I'm trying to decide on what to get for mine and I glad I found this. These cars have been around for 2 decades so I figured we must have more variety than just the board sponsors, even though they carry nice parts apparently.

More or less an combination of SFCs and a new TQ arm that has is smaller distance. I think we've covered this before on the board, course I could be wrong.
As for the S&W cages, I bought a roll bar from them. Pretty nice setup. If you get clearanced bars for door armrests they send you the old straight ones too I used them to make an x brace between the rear bars.

that's what I thought from looking at the picture of the S&W connector, it looks shorter like it doesn't go back to the rear lower control arm pickups or something.
is it possible to use a combination of the S&W connector and conventional subframe connectors like Spohns that go around the perimeter of the car?
I'll give S&W and Spohn a call tomorrow.

I have their TA and SFCs. There won't be an easy way to run perimeter style and these SFCs at the same time as they have bars that go out to the pinch welds from the front subframe gussets at the tranny tunnel. These bars would either need to be hacked off or the perimeter ones would have to be cut, notched, and welded to these (that would be a nice setup - really ties everything together!).
They work great aside form dropping ground clearance quite a bit. The crossmember that comes with them goes under the intermediate pipe of the exhaust system so it is pretty low. They are bolt in but can easily be welded in if you like. The rear end of the SFC legs does go around the LCA mounting point.
Don't have any pics of them though... Workin on it (along with lots of other things).

thanks
I suspected it would be something like that, but it would be an ultra-rigid setup!
I do like the way the crossmember ties the sides together...probably helps torsional rigidity quite a bit.
so do you think these work better than independent perimeter style connectors?
I tell you what looks like an awesome cage, although pricey and a pain to integrate would be the Ed Quay cage:

It's a sixteen point cage, goes through the firewall to the back of the shock towers and from the front of the shock towers down to the frames. I saw a drag Supra like that and thought "yep, that's the way to do it." Should make the car hella-rigid lengthwise.

I have an S&W 8 point roll bar in my 84 Trans Am. it was more work then I thought when I got the bars. each bar looked like it was plasma cut so they would fit together w/no mods to the bars. I was wrong. every bar was to long and so I took them all to work (cnc machine shop) to cut them to the right lengths, this is where I became an artist with an angle grinder. each bar end had to be ground to match the angle of the floor pan, the bar it was supposed to butt up against etc. there was not one bar that had to have work done to it. I called S&W about this and they assured me they sent me the right roll bar. this was alot of work but really I didn't mind much b/c I had the time and tools to do everything myself. after I got all the bars cut and ground so they would all fit together it took me 6 hours to weld it all in place. I though it might stiffen up the car to the point that it may be uncomfortable to drive a long distance but it really isn't bad at all, don't get me wrong though, it really stiffens things up alot and you can feel it when driving. its not a bad roll bar but just don't expect to get it and weld it in the day after you get it. who knows maybe I just got the wrong roll bar and they didn't want to admit to it I don't know.
