my steering box seems to be leaking from the bottom. my guess is that there is a seal of some sort that is worn out, but none of the auto part stores seem to know anything about a rebuild kit for it.

Is there a basic rebuild kit i can get that just replace the seals? any part numbers? i even went to a GM dealer and they didnt even want to try and help

 

Yes there is a seal (2 seals held in by 2 washers actually). Yes there is a rebuild kit. The kit costs about $35 IIRC. I usually get them at NAPA. If your local NAPA can't help you, visit their web site, seems like they're on there.

They're not all that hard to rebuild, except that they're heavy and awkward and need alot of force on the fasteners and stuff. And, reloading the little ***** into the ball guides on the worm gear is a real exercise in patience. Use some NON-FIBER heavy grease like wheel bearing grease or something to hold them in place while you assemble it.
