cant get rear calipers aligned with mounting holes

took my rear calipers off, put the new pads on. and i cant get the caliper back on. there the piston is all the way retracted and the pads will slide over the rotor, however i cant get the caliper over the mounting holes because there is some washers or something stuck there that doesnt allow the caliper to slide back over the holes with new pads.

i have an 84 z28

Are these "washers" on the calipers? I wonder if they're the caliper "slides", and if they've shifted in their rubber bushings.

Yes, Tom is correct. The "washers" are actually bushings that should move freely in the caliper holes. pull them fellers out, clean 'em, and lube 'em up good, stick 'em back in, and down the road ya go.......

Have fun.

Cool, glad to see I guessed right!! If you want to buy a new kit, I bought a "rear caliper hardware kit", which came with new bushings and slides. The ones on my junkyard treasure were pretty rusted up. Kit was only $6, from Bendix, part # H5611- great buy! The local "real" auto parts store (not a pep boys or autozone), or a place like expressautoparts.com , will be able to order it for you.

What's not a great buy are the caliper mounting bolts (if yours are rusted, they should be replaced, unless you can lube 'em like ploegi said).. they're about $15/each- yep, each.
