Miserable leaking e-brake actuator! Help!

Miserable leaking e-brake actuator! Help!
Help me, Obi Wan, I'm starting to wish I had drums...
After installing two new rear calipers on my '86, I had fluid leaks from the e-brake shaft on both sides. I was able to adjust the leak out on the right side (by playing with the depth to which the shaft is screwed into the piston), but the left side still leaks like a cheap sieve. I took the caliper off and tore it all the way down (to figure out how it's *supposed* to seal) -- nothing looks damaged, and it looks like the only available way to screw up the installation is to have the shaft the wrong depth so that the seal on the shaft isn't engaging the inside of the bore. Is there a secret here that I'm missing?
I've read about guys having to go back for two or three rebuilt calipers before getting one that doesn't leak from the e-brake shaft. Is there another option, anything else I can check before giving up and just trying another caliper? I hate blindly replacing stuff when don't understand the problem, but having to top off the MC every time I get in the car is really starting to suck!
