I can't recall when the new style came around (maybe 90), but the two are interchangeable.

I thought they were the same all through the third generation. Are the newer ones better in some way? Lighter maybe?

It has always been my understanding that there were only 2 different spindles for the 3rd gens: One for 1LE equipped cars (to mount the PBR calipers), and the other for everything else.

designs, yes.

but when they started looking into modifying spindles to work with the new brake setups, they found diffrences.

If you own AndyZ28's 1LE CD, you'll note that there are two versions: 82-89 and 90-92. The pictures show that the latter spindles have a bit more metal (casting, I guess), so that they require a bit of grinding down in one area in order to mount the caliper carrier bracket. Because of the added material, the 90-92 versions may be a bit stronger, but in every other way the 82-89 and 90-92 versions are identical as far as I can see.

There's not much to it.... cut, drill, tap, install.

Yes, Andy's CD runs you through the whole business. Like you, I was apprehensive, but the modification wasn't that big a deal.

The transition to the newer style spindles was during 1990. The only difference is more meat to the casting around the dust shield holes that you drill and tap to add the 1le caliper adapter brackets. I used the later style for my 1le conversion, but lots of people use the older style spindles with no adverse effects. I used a grinder with a cutoff wheel to cut down the first spindle, but I used a hacksaw on the second one, and I recommend the latter method for cutting them because a grinder cuts through so fast, if you make a mistake you're basically screwed. I also discovered that using a good hacksaw with a new blade cuts through them really easy anyways. One other thing I recommend when modifying them is to bolt the adapter bracket to the spindle using longer versions of the original dust shield bolts with large washers to attach the adapter bracket to the spindle while you drill and tap the holes. Just remove one bolt after you get the bracket lined up while you drill and tap the other hole. The bracket acts as a guide to help you drill and tap the hole straight instead of at an angle. I ruined one of the first spindles I modified because I tapped the holes at too much of an angle. Just my .02.
