Car: 1984 Trans Am H.O.
Engine: 350
Transmission: 700-R4
Axle/Gears: stock 3.73
ball joint

checked out my ball joint on the passenger side, and it needs to be changed. will i need a press to get the old one out and the new one in? any other tools I will need?

you need a press and you need other tools pickle fork, sockets, and few common hand tools. torch and impact make things lot easier.

You can rent a hand-held balljoint press from AutoZone. Be prepared though, as it takes quite a bit of force to pop the balljoint out. A large breaker bar helps for leverage.

Your other option is to remove the A-arm and take it to a machine shop. They will use a hydraulic press to remove and install the balljoints. Should only cost around $10 each.
